It is like a character trait which realizes aspects of routine and achieving maximum level of everyday tasks. They now realize that school is like a job. Getting organized in the morning or night before. Having everything you need at hand and organizing their stuff to be used over and over again. Life will always be more structured with that trait for their future. It's all in a days work! That is how i prepare my kids for the first day of school.

Then, we pick out their clothes the night before, and make their favorite breakfast (pancakes). After they get on the bus, I invite over parents for a "back to school coffee" and we relish on the mornings events

We talk about the things they will learn that year and the friends they get to see again ! The more we talk about it the more excited they get to go back to school ! My kids are usually so excited by the time the first day finally get here and thats makes me so happy and proud ! I think its important for them to want to go to school and be excited to learn new things !

As a parent, I've been preparing my son for the first day with a paper-chain countdown, new shoes and a backpack, and by reading lots of books about school.

Since she goes to a private school, we still take her "back-to-school" shopping for new clothes and shoes to replenish her wardrobe. What girl doesn't like to shop??!

I tried to give them an extra special, extra healthy meal before their first day. Then they had to wash up and I tried to make them as presentable as possible. When that was done we had to do a final backpack check to make sure everyone had their lists complete. Getting everyone out the door and into the car was a chore because the little ones wanted to bring their favorite toys with them. My 9 and 7 year olds were dropped off first at their school without much hassle. My 6 year old twins, on the other hand, put up quite a fuss when we got to their school. It took some time and reassurance but I finally got them into their classroom. After all that, I really wanted to go home and sleep. That wasn't going to happen, though, because I am a student too and it was my turn to get to class. Tomorrow we will do it all over again.

In addition to getting them mentally ready, we also shop together for fun things like a lunch box, new shoes, new clothes. We will be picking out a new outfit together for the 1st day of school. 2010-2011 will be another wonderful year!

Now my 3 oldest are in college and I am realizing those things helped little. Now we cherish every last minute of summer , with picnic lunches, mini golf, and watching sunsets. We buy the shoes later and they catch up on their sleep--they are kids!!

Always scrambled eggs with toast, orange juice (coffee when I got older) and put on the outfit I picked out a week ahead of time. Now, even in college, I still make myself the same breakfast on the first day, and still follow the same schedule. I always have my backpack prepacked with the essentials for each class, and I always make a point to put a pen in my pocket for the points in time during the day when you feel like too many people ask for one, and you just have to make sure you still have one. I love the first day of school. I always have, and I think I always will.

At that point, I begin organizing and photocopying papers for September. I also make a list of items that I will need to buy for the upcoming school year. I don't actually begin purchasing items until August so that I could get the best bargains.
