Mommy…where do babies come from?
Categories: Toys & Games
Maybe this doll won't help you answer the "birds and the bees" question, but it certainly
will give your mama friends a giggle or two. The latest issue of Knitty (the
hippest thing going in knitting 'zines, fyi) featured this pretty, cuddly doll for your baby - or for a silly, but
still luxurious, baby shower gift.
What is it, you ask? It's the womb, and fallopian tubes, and ovaries, of course. It's not entirely anatomically correct, but it sure is fun, and you can probably knit it up in a few hours.
Thanks to Larissa, who's making one in cashmere for her babe-to-be.

Our birth class instructor had a knitted womb with a doll inside of it that she used for all sorts of demonstrations. Fun and funny.

Lilly, we had the same sort of thing. I remember what the instructor said: "Yes, this is what you think it is, a knitted uterus. We have a woman who makes them. The thing that always struck me was, did she start out thinking, Hey, I'll knit a uterus? Or, you know, did it start out as a hat or something and then she said You know what that looks just like...?"

I've heard of these knitted teaching uteruses! and always wondered about the thought process behind it, myself. it takes a very special knitting midwife, i think. but the funny thing...all my pregnant friends (plus me) are dying to knit the womb doll!
