Are cell phones safe for children?

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies

Are cell phones safe for young children? The chairman of England's National Radiological Protection Board says no. William Stewart advises parents not to give cell phones to children under the age of eight because they could suffer from negative health effects from the radiation. While there is no conclusive evidence to prove that the phones are harmful to adults or children, some research points to health risks including brain tumors. Some experts dispute this idea, but Stewart warns that the phones should be kept away from kids as a precautionary measure. "When you come to giving mobile phones to a 3- to 8-year-old, that can't possibly be right," he said. Scientists in the field suggest that further research should be done, especially when it comes to the effects on children.

According to a recent survey 200,000 kids between the ages of five and nine have their own cell phones, as well as seven million American adolescents.
