An interview with the Starbucks "nurse-in" activist
Filed under: Work Life, Nutrition: Health
Last summer we reported about a "nurse-in" held at
a Maryland Starbucks in an attempt to make the company change its attitude toward nursing mothers. The nurse-in came
about after Lorig Charkoudian was asked by a Starbucks manager to stop nursing her 15-month-old daughter or move to the
restroom, even though legally mothers are entitled to nurse their children in any public place.
HipMama.com has an interview with Charkoudian, who set up
www.nurseatstarbucks.org because of the many responses she was receiving
about this idea. Because of her story, other nurse-ins have been held around the country. Charkoudian has also received
emails from people criticizing her for "lounging at Starbucks" rather than working or doing something educational with
her daughter. In the interview, Charkoudian says she's committed to keep working on this cause. "I think there's an
incredible amount of energy out there, and I'd love see that harnessed and realized. I'd love to see regular nurse-ins
all across the country."
