Organization strives to help parents balance work and family
The ThirdPath Institute is a non-profit, nationally-based organization
committed to teaching parents how to redesign work so they have more time for family, community, and other life
passions. Working parents know that finding balance between work and family life is a constant struggle that has the
potential to cause a lot of added stress at home. Dutch, one of the parent-contributors to
sweetjuniper, laments that his working hours keep him away from his baby
daughter when she is "at her best, smiling and laughing and learning so much about the world." He can appreciate that
there is an organization willing to explore a "third path," or, as he puts it, "an alternative to staying home without
pay and working ridiculous hours just to pay the rent."
ThirdPath's mission primarily revolves around the issues facing parents who work and who also wish to stay actively
involved in the care of their children. To accomplish this, the institute teaches parents about
Shared Care, a new method
for balancing work and family. The project also sponsors workshops and trainings, and has published several guides
including, Shared Care: Building A Resilient Family. Though their focus is mainly on working parents,
ThirdPath believes the changes they propose are applicable to all people. [via
