Katie Holmes will try for drug-free, "silent birth"
According to the New York Daily News, Katie Holmes will be giving birth without drugs, in silence. That's because her fiancé, psychiatry expert, Tom Cruise, is a Scientologist. Practitioners of Scientology are against painkillers, but insist on "silent birth" because "they believe it's traumatic for babies to hear their mothers groan or cry." Scientologists follow the teaching of their founder, L. Ron Hubbard who said, "Maintain silence in the presence of birth to save the sanity of the mother and the child and safeguard the home to which they will go." But it's not just a silent birth. Scientologists also prescribe seven days of silence for newborns "so their first week on Earth is trauma-free. But this has run afoul of state-mandated blood tests, which require at least a pinprick." I just…it's like…I mean…I don't know what to say.

Cecelia said...to the most recent post, I think that it isn't possible to know exactly how you will react when it is your time to give birth. My sister had both of her children without painkillers only because she progressed from labor so quickly that there wasn't any time. My own labor went on for 10 hours, and I screamed--to get some attention. I will certainly admit that the "chatter" of others was distracting and more than a little annoying. I am not a Scientologist, but I can definitely understand the intent of the practice of "silence". I can also understand why you wouldn't want to have many people around during the first week of life.
Your body WILL change with pregnancy, so even if you have "narrow" hips now, you may be considerably different once you've carried a child to term. There are some documented risks to you and your child with a C-section, so you may want to research all of the potential side affects before you go with an elective C-section.

I second the notion that all of these birth theories are coming from MEN. I highly recommend the book Birthing From Within. Lots of good Ideas for birthing beyond breathing.

Carmen said...Only the inexperience would go along with the "SILENT BIRTH." And, most likely this all began with a "MAN suggesting it." Give me a break! There is no such thing.. Giving birth is a beautiful experience, but VERY PAINFUL. Only MY LADIES would know this for sure. Katie, has never had a baby, and I know for a fact that after this experience, she will demand Tom to convert to a Catholic. Where the sound of a birthing Mother is as sweet as the cry a baby just born....
