Pregnant women: limit coffee to three cups a day, say scientists
Categories: Pregnancy & Birth, Safety, Eating & Nutrition
As a woman who can't typically live without caffeine, I know that the old rule of thumb on pregnant coffee intake was five cups per day or less. But a new comprehensive study on caffeine intake during pregnancy reports that the likelihood of fetal death, compared with non-coffee drinkers, is increased by 33% for those who drink four to seven cups of coffee a day, and 60% for those who drink eight or more. Drinking three or fewer only resulted in a 3% increased chance of fetal death.
Scientists are recommending that pregnant women limit coffee intake to three cups a day (which I rarely went above when I was pregnant). The abstract of the article doesn't mention what size these cups should be; I assume eight ounces? Does anyone know for sure?
