Running with the mamas: combining exercise with social outlet
Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Media
I've got a mama's running group, organized during the end of
my pregnancy with Truman. I had a wild tear to run a marathon five months after his birth. When that goal seemed a
little steep (one of the mamas concerned was due with her baby in late July), we all compromised at a
half-marathon, which we'll be running on October 30. Next summer, we plan to have an all-mama team for the
197-mile, all-day, all-night Hood to Coast relay.
When I read this article in the New York Times about women running together, it really resonated with me. Most of the mamas I run with are super busy, juggling work, children, blogging and a wide variety of crafty pursuits (most of us knit, for instance). We've had little time to socialize outside of our glorious long runs on Saturday mornings. And as the Times article says, "for some women, preparing for a race with female friends is the ultimate form of multitasking, a way to knock both exercise and socializing off the to-do list." After my runs, my knees ache, my back hurts, and I'm starving - but I'm spiritually rejuvenated, and it's all worth it.
