Tales of minivan love: the Mazda 5
Minivans not mini enough for you? Or worse, they remind you that
(yes) you are becoming your parents? Maybe you could try the Mazda 5. According to Jeff Sabatini, it drives like a
"rather sporty" car; it's easy to mistake for a sporty wagon instead of the dreaded soccer mom vehicle; and best of
all, it can easily fit a snowboard. For a man who gave up his motorcycle and his Mazda Miata upon becoming a parent
(not to mention his job; his wife is the primary breadwinner), Jeff couldn't be more pleased.
Except, of course, that the Mazda 5 isn't currently available. Models were pulled from dealerships after reports of three engine fires, and while everything's being fixed up, you'll have to wait until sometime in November to buy your micro-minivan with the Miata soul. I'm now adding this to the 2005 Nissan Quest under the title, "cars I would buy used in 2008." Does the Mazda 5 come in black? [via Daddy Types]

Or rather, we did -- before it was recalled.
The dealer is still waiting for the part to come from Japan to fix it, and in the meantime, they rented us.... a Ford Freestar, which gets like 2 mpg, God help us.
The Mazda 5 doesn`t have as much power as I`d like, to make those fast lane changes on the freeway fully loaded, but I was favorably impressed by how well it does on San Francisco`s hills with just 4 cylinders. If it weren`t for the recall, I would be singing its praises, but... I don`t know when I`ll ever get to drive it again.
(&%$#! Japanese!!!! A country in DECLINE!)

Meredith said...I have a close friend who loved theirs for a month before it was 'grounded' at the dealer. The good part? Mazda has promised them it will be back in the next 2 weeks and is giving them $500 plus extending their warranty another 3 months.
This will be our next car, provided that the second generation is better than the first.
