Blogging Baby Size Six: Movies my child watches without me
Categories: Media
Evening is TV time in our family. It's part of our bedtime
routine. But I admit, once the TV goes on, I am doing something else, like cleaning up the dinner dishes or blogging.
We reconnect a half an hour later for brushing teeth and bedtime stories. I hear all of these movies, but I'm
not exactly watching them. As a result, we have a collection of kids' movies that I have never seen. Heard? Yes. Seen
snippets here and there? Yes. But sat and watched all the way through? No. And I kinda like it that way.
-
Robots: Ewan MacGregor stars. I only know this because the robot looks exactly like him. And I think I recognize Robin Williams' voice.
-
Shark's Tale: Once we were out in public and Bunny started singing, "I like big butts and I cannot lie." It's because she learned it from the movie. The song comes on for, like, a nanosecond and that's what sticks?
-
Caillou: I don't need an excuse not to watch this, do I?
-
Leap Frog Letter Factory: Bunny watched it and learned all her letter sounds. Phew! Cross that off the list.
-
Shrek/Shrek 2: Every. Night. I'm telling you. Every. Night.
-
Finding Nemo: I choose to start this movie after the tragic opening events, but Bunny actually prefers to start the movie when Marlin finally reaches Sydney Harbor. She doesn't like the middle parts so she only watches the last 10 minutes. I guess we both don't watch this one.

very funny - I don't know how many times I've watched Thomas and the Magic Railroad, and yet - I've only actually sat down and paid attention to a few scenes. and they're all very, very odd.
and I never watch scene 1 in Finding Nemo. why? why does Disney kill off all moms everywhere? what does Walt have against mothers?

You wondered that too Sarah? I thought it was just me. The girls love Bambi and I won't spoil it for them with my opinion but I certainly have one. Land Before Time? Mother dead in first 15 minutes. Snow White? wicked stepmother. Cinderella? Yep. In Snow White and Cinderella, the dads were absent or wimps and in Bambi, dad showed up just long enough to perform an heroic rescue and pose for a picture.
Moms and dads both deserve better. Yeah, I know, get off my soap box, it's just a movie.

I bought Leap Frog Letter Factory after a friend recommended it, but without any songs, the beginning doesn't hold the attention of my (almost) two year-old so we haven't been able to get more than 10 minutes in before he insists I change it out to watch his favorite: Baby Signs videos. I don't push Letter Factory too much because he already learned his alphabet from foam letters he plays with in the tub.

Why do parents get killed off in first 15 minutes of Disney movies? Here's the answer: If they were around, why wouldn't they be saving their dear little angels from harm?
It's one of the 7 basic plots: kill off the parents, so the kid can find his/her way in the world. Gee, I knew that college playwriting course would be useful for something, right?
