The Game of Life teaches our kids...marriage equality?

While participating in a play this year, Neve developed a Taste for The Game of Life, which I'm sure nearly everyone in our audience has played at some point. We decided to get her a copy%uFFFD for Christmas so that she could play to her heart's content. Now, I haven't played Life in at least 15 years, so adjusting to the updated board took some doing. It's not that they changed any of the rules or the layout; it's just that everything is so damn modern. Housing prices reflect the new reality, with even a mobile home running you $60,000. (even so, the eight-bedroom for $160,000 is still laughable for us Seattleites.) There are slots on the board for "Host on-line concert", "Buy high-definition TV", and "Have web site designed." (That last one costs $45,000. Who are you hiring that's demanding $45K for a Web site - Ogilvy & Mather??)
But there was one thing that caught my eye above all others. The game comes with blue (boy) and pink (girl) pegs that you insert in your character piece, which is a car. Next to the board space where you get married (the game forces you to get hitched - what kind of example does that set for our kids??), there's a traditional drawing of a man and a woman in groom and bridal attire. But when instructing you to put your spouse in the car, the rules simply tell you to put another peg in your car - not necessarily a peg of the opposite color.l
Who would've thought we'd find marriage equality modeled in a board game? The times they are a-changin'.

MamaChristy said...Sorry to break it to you, but for a professional design of a Web site, $45K is pretty average. I'm not sure if the board game refers to a personal or business site. For a personal site I would agree: $45K is ludicrous. For a business site with a much of the functionality you expect - especially for a retail site - $45K isn't just accurate, it might be low. (My husband works in the industry so I'm familiar...)

I clicked on the link for Katherine, commenter #1. It took me to youth resource, a site for GLBT kids. I wish she had said that; it looks like something that is badly needed. Since she didn't, I will. The link above is a little different than here. It goes to their "mission statement".
I know it's a little off topic but these kids need to know there is help for them. Katherine opened this door; I'm just walking through it.

You can get a very good blog design done for well under $1,000. All most people need is good blog software and an ass-ton of content. The only people who "need" $45K Web site designs are medium- to large-scale businesses that require extensive programming.
And yes, I know I'm way off-topic now. :-)

MamaChristy said...Jay - You are very right: Blog sites are certainly at a different price point than companies, particulary large ones, when it comes to the cost of a site redesign. Likely the redesigners of the game were think about the cost to redesign the Matel Web site. (How's that for trying to bring it a little bit back to the topic! :)
