Gerber Mini Fruits and Veges: Baby finger food that rocks
Filed under: Nutrition: Health, Development/Milestones: Babies
My son, Nolan, was eating baby food only
three-and-a-half years ago. Yet the food choices I have now for Quin, nearly eight months old, are so much more fun.
From Latin-inspired
flavors baby food to exploring more "real" tastes like peach-mango tofu, yogurt and eggs (yolk-only, of
course). We're now working on his finger-food skills - you know, the pincer grasp and all - and baby finger foods is an
area where I lack all creativity. Especially when Q. still has no teeth. Cheerios just don't do the trick - too hard and
he gags on them. When I spotted Gerber Mini Fruits and Veges at the supermarket over the weekend, you'd think I just purchased some serious new bling. In the shopping cart they went. We'd already tested the Vege Puffs and while Quin likes them, they tend to stick to his hands, which makes it hard to get the darn pieces in his mouth. And well, they stick to his intestines...the main ingredient of the Puffs is rice cereal so the little man gets backed up somethin' fierce. But the Mini Fruits are just freeze-dried apples, corn, and a banana strawberry "medley" as they say in baby food speak. Quin's tasted the apple and corn so far and he digs them both. The pieces are tiny and they dissolve is his mouth, so less stress about choking. Nolan likes them too, which is a problem. He could eat the whole bag in one handful so I'm pushing fresh fruit on the big boy.

I have yet to try the freeze dried stuff, though the puffs have been a big hit. Now I will try them, thanks for the suggestion.
My son has yet to turn away food - I tried feta cheese, raw onion and pesto hummus and the little guy doesn't even blink.

the girls' moma said...I found the Just Tomatoes brand of freeze-dried fruit and veggies when my daughter was 1 (justtomatoes.com). She loves the strawberries and the corn and peas and still eats them. It's sold on the organic aisle and is a little pricey. I'm glad to see my younger daughter will be able to try the Gerber line and it will be a little cheaper!
