Why does my son think everything is "tight"?
Okay,
television networks, I want answers. Which one of your programs taught my six-year-old son Jaxon to refer to everything
cool as being "tight" - as in, "That move I just did on Ultimate Spider-Man on the Xbox
was tight!" My wife believes he picked it up from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody on The Disney
Channel. A pity, if true. I used to like that show. (Outside of the way it rips off its theme song from "Ballroom
Blitz", of course.)I don' t know why this bothers the hell out of me. Perhaps it's the sexual implications of the term that bug me. In the end, I think it's despondency. If Disney or Cartoon Network or whoever have burrowed themselves this deeply inside my kids' brains, I have no hope of ever getting them out.

Mike said...I really dont understand why this bothers you so much? Slang is very much a creative side to our culture. It allows all to change the very world we live in. I am nearly thirty years old! I happen to work for a law firm and using the word "tight" is not unncommon for my vocabulary. I also would like to reiterate that the word "tight" has absolutely no sexual refrence when used.

christy said...Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the sexual reference of "tight." (Remember, urbandictionary.com definitions can be contributed by ANYONE.) I am a designer and tight often refers to a good design. If it's tight it means it just fits together well, there's nothing extraneous, etc.
I mean, you don't get mad when someone says the floor is "wet" do you?

Tyler Bring said...Um "tight" has nothing to do with a sexual reference. I honestly dought that The zach and cody show had to do anything with that word. My daughter watches that all the time. Tight is just a new cool word like sweet, or even cool. Your son isnt gonna be walking around saying "groovy" or some old school saying. Its just a new word.
