My favourite travel gear: the Hammacher Schlemmer Car Seat
Filed under: Work Life, Health & Safety: Babies, Media
Our first vacation as a family was to Santa Fe, New
Mexico. Our travel plans had us flying in from Houston to Albuqueque, and then taking the scenic 2-hour
drive to Santa Fe. At the time, our daughter Alex was 6 months old, and the thought of travelling with a car seat
galled us -- there was so much else to travel with! To avoid the hassle, we contacted the rental car company and
asked them to provide us with a car seat for our infant.WELL.
The car seat they provided was so old and so rickety that I feared for my daughter's life every time we got in the car. It didn't sit snugly in the seat and it was filthy. We did everything short of wrapping rosary beads around the thing to keep her safe. And we vowed never again. We would always travel with our own carseat.
As providence would have it, before our next trip, we discovered this car seat by Hammacher Schlemmer, for US$199.95 We love this car seat. Not only is it secure, it can be used forward- or rear-facing, and -- get this -- with the press of a button, it turns into a sturdy, maneuverable stroller (the wheels fold up into the bottom of the seat when not in use). It accommodates children from 5 to 40 pounds. We've taken this thing everywhere with us -- and although we always check it at the airport, it's FAA approved to be used as an airline seat (although check with your airline first before use).
Available at Hammacher Schlemmer, who ship internationally.

Serena said...I'd recommend against checking your Car seat. The luggage handlers are less then gentle with the itmes in their care. I've seen many seats tossed and dropped while awaiting their flight. Best policy is to purchase a seat for the child and use the seat on the flight. At the very least try to gate check it. It's less likely to be droppped and throw as much. It'll also ensure that it doesn't get lost in transit leaving you seatless.
