Cooking Rocks Challenge: Week 1 - Candy Sushi
Filed under: Preschoolers, Nutrition: Health, Development/Milestones: Babies
To make Candy Sushi:
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter, cut into pieces, in a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir in 6-8 large marshmallows. When they are completely melted, remove the pan from the stove and have your child stir in 1 cup of Rice Crispies cereal to the marshmallows. Roll out 1 fruit roll-up, any flavor (see tip below). Little chef can do the following: put about 3 tablespoons of the cereal-marshmallow mix on the fruit roll-up, placing it towards the back edge. Save the leftovers for another time. Press 2 red licorice sticks onto the mix. Wrap and roll the fruit roll-up so it looks like a sushi roll.
You're almost done! Now, take a sharp knife and run it under warm water. Cut the Candy Sushi into thick slices and arrange them on a plate. It should make between 4-6 sushi rolls depending on the size of the fruit roll-up.
Tip: We first tried this with a generic fruit roll up and it kept tearing when we tried to roll the sushi.. On later attempts we used Betty Crocker Fruit Roll-Ups and they worked perfectly.
The whole process took about 10 minutes. Time for Nolan to eat the Candy Sushi - about 5 seconds.
Even though the ingredients look like your child will be running on a sugar high all night, it's actually not as bad as you'd think. Nolan had four pieces an hour before bedtime and the sweets didn't have any impact on him. It's not the healthiest dessert, and he won't be having it every night on end. But I'd definitely use it as a treat when his friends come over for playdates or parties.
