Cooking with kids: Easy homemade pretzels

My three-year-old loves to help cook, and
especially loves baking. At her old preschool she made pretzels and other goodies, and at her new preschool she helps
to make challah every Friday. She particularly enjoys making the pretzels because the dough can be rolled and twisted
any number of ways. If you aren't watching the Super Bowl today, you might try this fun cooking project instead.Pretzels
1 package of yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of sugar
4 cups of flour
1 egg, beaten
sea salt (rock salt prefereable)
Preheat oven to 350º.
Measure warm water into a large bowl. Sprinkle on yeast and stir until soft. Add salt, sugar, and flour. Mix and knead dough with hands. Roll and twist into any desired shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet. Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle with salt. Bake 12-15 minutes.

Now she asks for patty-cakes about twice a week, and I can almost always make them for her because they're so easy. They make a great snack to have around the house.
I do skip the egg wash and just rub a little water on the pretzels before sprinkling with salt, then I press the salt into the dough and it sticks just fine. That way, I have one less dish to wash. I also brush with melted butter as soon as they're pulled out of the oven. I'm eating one right now!
