Photography: tips for parents of very new babies
Filed under: Your Pregnancy, Activities: Babies
We decided early on to spend some serious money on our
birth announcements. I'd waited years to have a baby, and I was going all out. Plus, I
suspected I'd be incredibly busy and tired, and I didn't want to feel a need to be crafty with a tiny wailing baby in
the house. So when I found purplestork.com I was really excited. And not disappointed. Our birth announcements from this company have received some Serious Compliments, even from professional photographer friends. We've even had a few people request doubles.
Part of what helped us create Sebastian's stunning announcement was this tip sheet from purplestork. It discusses everything from how to set your digital camera, and how to dress your baby for the greatest effect, to how to position your baby in a way that not only maximizes lighting but also is comfortable for the infant. It's kinda fun - and yeah, sort of creepy, but mostly fun - how they use a doll to show you the process all the way from the in-home setup to the final birth announcement postcard.
Do you have another favorite site for improving this mama-blogger's photography skills? I plan to do a series of posts, with a few interviews of photographers and several links, for taking pictures of babies on up.
[Thanks to Brenda Eckhardt, a photographer, for the suggestion to blog about photo tips - a subject I'd been wanting to cover!]

Amy said...Wow - good timing! My husband and I are just in the process of starting up a site about digital photography for the baby set. It's called Shooting the Kids and can be found at http://shootingthekids.dpblogs.com.
It's still relatively new and we're working on getting more content up, but I would be interested to see what kinds of topics parents want to know more about in terms of digitally shooting their kids. Most of us do it anyway, so we thought it would be a good resource for people to easily learn how to take better photos of their children.

Amy said...Also, you can check out this post on my photography blog, Shooting the Kids, about what kinds of things new parents should capture on camera! Hopefully it will help parents lighten up on themselves about some of those "baby's firsts" they might have missed.

Her site is In a Baby Carriage and can be found http://inababycarriage.com/ and I have heard that her stuff is amazing and high quality. I was too stressed to do photo announcements but I plan on using her the next time.

ivymae said...We used their tips for photos, i made my own template on Photoshop, and then printed our own postcards through vistaprint.com for an excellent price (all in all, we paid 50 cents per announcment.) Just a tip.
