Toxic stuffed toys?
Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Toys
You can't give your kids plastic toys because of phthalates, PCBs and dioxins. Some wooden toys from
Europe have toxic paint. Just when you thought it was safe to give your child a toy, the Society of Environmental
Toxicology and Chemistry reports that stuffed toys carry DDT and flame retardants. Mothering gives tips on how to get
safer stuffed toys, by avoiding recycled materials, surface washable only and washing them before giving them to your
child. I'm off to wash Owen's new stuffed kitty . . .

There is such a Catch 22 in manufacturing anything these days in order to make it safer or more environmentally responsible. This is a good example. Another is the MTBE debate with gasoline. Industry added MTBE as an oxygenator to help gasoline burn more completely, so there would be fewer resulting emissions and particulate matter. Unfortunately, MTBE (as well as gasoilne and diesel fuel) are polluting our nations' waterways and aquifers. Many states in New England and many counties in California, where clean air standards are a very big deal, have 100% of their water supplies impacted by MTBE.
And we're just now finding out that MTBE might be carcinogenic.
Ugh...
So, while we have all of these great chemicals to make our lives easier and "safer", it turns out that they're probably much worse in the long run.
I wish we could go back to the early part of the 1900s, before chemicals were everywhere. Then again, I wouldn't have my internet connection or my latte...

Janice said...No - not even the sticks and rocks are safe - they are probably contaminated with carcinogenic soil.
It is pretty sad these days eh?
I try to be conscious of all the carcinogenic concerns etc, but sometimes I just give up. I am sure my sons toy boxes are full of dangerous chemicals.
Seriously, what are we supposed to do???
