Reebok heart-shaped charm bracelet recalled

Reebok has recalled about
300,000 heart-shaped charm bracelets which came with the purchase of various children's shoe styles between May 2004
and March 2006.A four-year-old child has died from lead poisoning after swallowing a piece of the bracelet. The bracelet should be taken away from children and disposed of.

Oh my god, that is so sad.
Unfortunately, that's what happens when you depend on a country like China for manufacturing. They have very little in the way of environmental or child protection laws.
That's actually one of the main reasons why it's cheaper to manufacture things there. There are no fines for exceeding limits for things like lead or arsenic in air/soil/water pollution, so that cost doesn't get passed on to the consumer.
