3-year-old boy trapped in Skill Crane!
Filed under: Places To Go, Media, Gadgets
Man, I wish I had been a fly on the wall in 911 dispatcher's office when this call came
in. Now I've heard of plenty of kids who have fallen down wells, but according to the Austin
Daily Herald, a 3-year-old boy at a Godfathers Pizza crawled up into a skill crane (you know, those games that you play
where you use a tiny mechanical arm to try to grab a stuffed toy) through the toy discharge suit. The kid must
be more flexible than the guy I once saw who put his entire body through a tennis racket at a side show. The Fire Chief
called to the scene said “It was the funniest thing I ever saw. I mean this is Mission:
Impossible stuff.”
The firefighters didn't need to break the glass on their emergency stash of quarters or utilize their superior crane skills to get the boy out of the machine: there was plenty of air, and he seemed to be enjoying himself while pizza parlor patrons took pictures of him with their digital cameras. The Fire Chief said, " The kid was in there playing, smiling, laughing. He thought it was fun.”
Firefighters did have to pry the plastic door open on the crane to get him out. Why didn't they just unlock the door that the pizza parlor uses to replenish prizes? Oh that's right, no one in the history of the earth has ever won anything with a skill crane. I hope they let this kid keep a stuffed Bart Simpson as a memento.

Meredith said...The same thing happened in Indiana in May 2005 when yet another 3-year-old climbed into one of these things. And, like with this toddler, there were plenty of news photographers there to document the moment.

I have to disagree with your comment, Dutch, about no one ever winning anything with a skill crane. I win things all. of. the. time.
It's all about timing. I wish I could train people in skill crane mojo, but sadly, like the Force, it is not something easily learned.

I'll try my luck again sometime soon and let you know how it all pans out.
(Where were the parents when this whole thing happened? Were they just hanging out, watching the kid climb in the thing?)
