Happy photographic accident: then and now
Filed under: Development/Milestones: Babies, Media, That's Entertainment
Last night I was going through my formidable
collection of digital photographs of my daughter, Alex, and I discovered a happy coincidence: I found two photographs
that I'd taken at pretty much the same spot of our home, with Alex doing pretty much the same thing, and smiling in
very similar ways -- except I took the shots a year apart. The shot you see at the top was taken the first week of April, 2005. The shot you see of Alex in the bottom photo was taken over the weekend.
I was certainly an accident that I happened to take such similar shots -- yet I'm really glad I did. While the changes a baby goes through in the first year are so dramatic that you can't help but notice them from photograph to photograph, I think the physical changes from a child's first birthday to his second are more subtle -- it's more about language and motor skills than drastic changes in facial features. So I'm pretty happy that I have this little record of her development.
Now, I'll have to see if I can remember to recreate the same happy "accident" during the first week of April in 2007.

suburban misfit said...I have a friend who started taking yearly photos of both his kids in the same rocking chair, in the same spot in their yard (summer birthdays), beginning with their first birthday.
It's *such* a great idea.
