Men fail to follow up after vasectomy, study suggests
Filed under: Just For Dads, Your Pregnancy
Web MD shares a study published
in BJU International consisting of data from 436 men who had vasectomies at The Clevland Clinic. It showed a quarter of
men do not follow the reccomended post-op screening to be sure the vasectomy was successful. You can read the full details of the study, but I have to tell you I was stunned to read this. I was so certain some mutant stealth sperm was going to slip past after my husband's vasectomy, I begged him to have three clear screenings, even though he hated dropping off his sample at the urologist's office. Three years and three clear screenings later, still I sometimes worry that mutant sperm are going to find their way through.
Maybe other people aren't as frightened at the possibility of getting pregnant again after deciding their family is finished? Once we'd decided we were done, it was because I really knew I could not handle anymore kids with any grace. Not that I'm doing it all that gracefully now. There was minor discomfort in the beginning, but if you followed dr's advice the systems lasted only short time. Yes i sat on bag of ice. I did my operation on a Friday so as to have weekend free. As you don;t know i worked construction and ran heavy equipment. It worked well no pain shovels sand on a wednesday, a tad early to do so,stopped and rested. I went back when he told me to, and a yr later. It was very sucessful and there is no physical damamge. Fellows i will tell you it still works just fine. So to finish do it finds a good dr. someone who doesn't pull any punches and everything will go along just fine. Happy snipping.

He said he heard it "sizzle" there was no way it didn't work.
When I started having morning sickness I made him go to a check-up before I had a pregnancy test and sure enough the vasectomy wasn't "sucessful". After we had our 4 child he had a 2nd vasectomy and I had my tubes tied. Doubled stiched holds better. I always say our 4th oone was meant to be....

I had no bleeding or discomfort-i reall enjoyed the "pain" killers and played it up big time for my wife-what a scoundrel

Brian said...I had it done after our 3rd child was born. The procedure went very well for me. It was performed in my doctors office in the morning and I was playing with my kids at Chuck E Cheeses by evening. I experienced minimal pain and missed no work because of it. I have no discomfort during sex and enjoy it as much as I did before the procedure. I have had 2 checkups since and have not recanted. My advice is to have it done by a doctor you know and trust. Mine was done by my regular doctor at his office and it greatly relieved any stress and anxiety I had about having it done.

Bob said...I had my vasectomy 40 years ago!! Procedure was Friday, we had friends over for bridge Saturday night, I went back to work Monday. Now, sex is like being in a great Western shoot-out film - plenty of noise, fire, smoke, and excitement, but just like in a movie, nobody really gets hurt! My vasectomy is GREAT.

Dave Cooper said...Had the big V when I was 31 (now 78). Some discomfort for a couple of weeks but no problems after that. Biggest scare when I was on the table and there came an "ooops" from one of the doctors.(He never explained it.)
I recommend it over tubal ligation. Women have enough to do without the additional pain of the procedure.

Sharon said...My husband is one of those males who has no desire to have his "masculinity" altered. It could also be that he was brought up Catholic, although he had no problem when I was on the pill. Now that I'm about to turn 40, and I had a difficult time conceiving anyway, we use the withdrawal method and it hasn't failed us thus far (the pill is not a good option for me right now). If I end up getting pregnant it wouldn't be a bad thing; we really don't anticipate that happening, though.
I wanted to mention that we are friends with a couple who seem to be very happy together. He had the big V done, and she has told me that ever since, he isn't interested in sex anymore! She had wanted to stop after three, and he agreed to do it because she didn't want her tubes tied. She now believes that knowing he isn't capable of fathering anymore children is the reason for his disinterest in sex. He swears up and down to her that he still doesn't want kids, but he used to be very active sexually. He doesn't want the procedure reversed, either. Who knows? Now she says she wished she had her tubes tied.

Willie said...Gentlemen, please! No need to be so squeamish about providing that post-operative "sample". I mean, it's not like you never did it before, right? (OK, maybe not into a cup, but still ...) And since you're being such a stand-up guy for the family, it seems pefectly reasonable to ask for a wifely "assist" with the procedure.

Brandie said...My husband just had it done Friday, his choice. I'm more ready to be done than not ready to be done, but he is 100% to have no more children! So he had it done. We looked into it and decided a vasectemy was better than tubes tied so that's the route we went!
It didn't even take 30 minutes to do, no stitches, and he took 2 tylenol for pain - but he has had lots of ice over the last 2 days. He says he pretty much feels fine, but he did try to pick something up that was heavy and he felt it pull slightly. Well, yeah, becuase he isn't supposed to be heavy lifting right now! LOL!
And FTR, he plans on providing all the samples necessary, and even saying he plans to get things checked out every few years just to be safe - he wants no accidental pregnancies! LOL!

Michelle said...This is for Dan:
Maybe "Mutant stealth sperm" was a little James Bond for you, especially since they don't actually sneak through. However, it IS possible for a vasectomy to reverse ALL BY ITSELF. Even after you have given those samples at the doctor and they have come back showing "blank" . It is rare, but it does happen.
So, no need to be snide about *women authors* or I might be force to make a comment about men drivers!

Nothing to do with being a woman, I'm not exactly sure what that comment even meant.
