The Biblical names of celebrity babies
Categories: Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Media
As you all know by now, Gwyneth
Paltrow and Chris Martin named their new little one "Moses" -- and it strikes me that along with their
daughter, Apple, there's a very Old Testament thing happening in the Paltrow-Martin home. Turns out giving kids
names with a Biblical ring is actually pretty popular amongst celebrities. USA Today is currently featuring an article of Biblical names and the celebrity
babies who carry them, including "Aaron" (parents Robert de Niro and Toukie Smith), "Delilah"
(parents Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna) and "Gabriel" (parents Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall). If you're into the idea of giving your children Biblical names, this article is a good source ... as is, of course... the Bible.

Paul is named after the Paul of biblical fame in a roundabout fashion. We chose to name him after two people who meant a lot to us, but had passed away. He was named after my husband's younger brother, who went by his saint's name. (His middle name is Welsh, and from my paternal grandfather.)
For us, it was less about having the name of a saint than a way to remember someone special who would have loved to be a part of his life. He was born on Christmas Day, and my first name (Mary) was on our charts, so the nursing staff teased us that we should give him the obvious biblical name.

Delilah was my #1 choice for a girl's name before we knew the sex of our son.
There are a lot of wonderful untapped old names in the Bible. Regardless of one's faith, it is a freat resource for unusual yet established baby names. "The Baby Name Wizard" by Laura Wattenberg has a grouping of Biblical names, including the not so well known.

I grew up with a girl that had 13 brothers and sisters and each of them had biblical names... the first 4 were simple everyday names- Joshua, Heather, Jason, and Emily- but after the fourth, the got real biblical... Jedidiah, Elijah, Aaron, Eden, Hannah, Isiah, Michah, Tarah, Lydia, and the last one was Zion.
Once a substitute asked Heather what her mother was like and she replied "Fertile".
