Bumbo baby seat: the babysitter
Categories: Baby essentials
I'm always stunned at how quickly
baby gear changes, the gear available when my daughter was born 7.5 years ago is so different from the gear available
now. Maybe it just feels like the gear changes really fast, since the years fly by so quickly when raising children.Anyway, reader Mary sent me a picture of her son using a Bumbo Babysitter and a glowing review. She, and three-month-old Evan love the seat, which has allowed him to sit upright by himself from an early age.
The Bumbo and the more dramatically named Prince Lionheart Bebe Pod Booster are molded boosters which hold a baby as young as three months old securely in an upright position. My daughter wanted to sit upright from 8 weeks on, the reclined bouncy seat became a torture device meant to keep her down and she railed against it. This would have been greatly appreciated in our house back then.

Oh! That's what it is! My cousin sent a picture of her 4-month-old in one of those, and I'd never seen it before either. My kids are 2 and 9 months, so I'm just out-of-touch. The gear does change fast.

We love the bumbo, I even wrote about it on my blog(http://ernmeg.blogspot.com/2006/03/love-bumbo.html). Lately, we've begun taking it to restaurants with us. Just last night, my son stayed so happy and content in it the whole meal. It's also a god-send when I'm trying to work in the kitchen. I can set it up on the counter and the baby can watch me get dinner ready. Love it!

We got one of these and loved it -- for the approximately three weeks between when Guen was too small for it and when she'd outgrown it. Basically, I'd say skip it unless you have another family with a child a few months younger you can pass it on to.
Gratuitous cute picture links:
Didn't like it at first:

but was happy by the next day:

And then shortly after that, she got too wiggly to sit in it, and we have a bunch of pictures like this:

we considered buying one after weeks of Ella trying to fling herself out of the bouncy chair, but instead i just strapped her into her high chair and called it good. She loves being up high, and the tray holds many things for her to throw on the ground. PLus, it has wheels and we can go room to room, playing race car shair, which isn't so easy with the bumpo. :P

We also loved the Bumbo for a short time:

When my son turned eight months, he started hurling himself out of it. Just a few days ago, he was in it while I was showering and managing to get out and then stretch himself out on the floor in front of the shower door. I was trapped for a good ten minutes.
I'm just glad the escaping started AFTER I stopped using the Bumbo on my countertop. That would have been terrifying.
