Tired of knitting for your kids? Knit for a penguin

Filed under: Work Life, Activities: Babies

Okay, so this story isn't technically about parenting, but come ON!  It's so cool it had to be shared.

The Sydney Times Herald is reporting that a global army of knitters have eschewed knitting for their children and grandchildren for their next project -- and instead, are knitting for penguins.

Apparently, the poor little fairy penguins on and around Philip Island Nature Park in Australia are sometimes found covered in oil from nearby oil spills.  The oil damages the penguins' natural insulation, leaving them exposed to the bitter cold -- hence, the rally cry for penguin sweaters heard around the world.

If you're interested in knitting for a penguin, this site gives the instructions on how to knit the penguin sweater, and where to send your finished product.  Could be a fun project to do with your kids.  As for me, I'm just breathing a sigh of relief:  finally,  a market for the knitting I do here in the hot tropics!
