Breastmilk: A cure-all?
Categories: Pregnancy & Birth, Safety, Playground Bureau
Usually, when I
think of breastmilk, I think of feeding a baby or toddler, either from a bottle or via the source. Kari over at The Dream You Are Living is Your Creation has pointed out a few other uses
for breastmilk.Kari refers to an article at Mothering.com that lists a variety of problems that the author claims can be cured by breastmilk.
As a lactating mother myself, I've heard of using your own milk to help with cracked nipples. Whipping out "the girls" in order to help someone with acne is a little more than I'm ready to offer.
According to Kari, breastmilk has helped with her son's excessive ear wax. Considering I have two waxy kids myself, this idea sounds interesting.
Did the article miss any other uses? What else have you heard of people using breastmilk for?

I've heard breastmilk cures clogged tear ducts.

Somewhere in my La Leche materials I have read that you can make "baby butter" out of breastmilk. You can use the butter on toast or whatever foods, but you can also use it as a skin cream for dryness, rashes, etc.

It cures pink eye and I've also heard about ear infections as well.

I've used it for conjunctivitis. It worked great. I also squirt it on minor cuts and abrasions because it fights infection. Sexy, no?

I've also used it as eye drops for my kids and also to help heal wounds.
I've actually used it to clean my contacts once or twice when there was nothing else available. (Much more hygenic than using saliva!)

It cleared up my daughter's cradle cap. I also put it on her little face scratches (when I haven't been diligent about clipping them) and they heal very quickly.

I used it as a liquid attack missle once when I was fighting with my husband. It ended the argument because we started laughing.

It won't "cure" a clogged tear duct, but it will keep it from getting infected.
Great for minor cuts and scratches. Squirt a little milk on it, then cover with some Lansinoh, and it will heal up really fast.
I'm experiementing to see if it helps with cradle cap. Makes the hair all sticky, though.

Instead of Saline drops to loosen nose mucus, I would just put a few drops of breastmilk in. I thought the passive antibodies would help clear up the cold.

I used it to cure cradle cap. It also worked on the pimples I started getting when my period came back (d&*n hormones!!). I'd try it for more stuff if I could, but I'm pump resistant, and can only express a few drops at a time. Hopefully I'll be more prolific with my next kid, because I'm thinking it would be a great hair conditioner, a fairly good floor wax, and, mixed with honey, would be a great hair remover.
