When a toddler goes on a nap strike

Filed under: Toddlers Preschoolers, Development/Milestones: Babies

Every few months, my 21-month-old daughter likes to test the waters when it comes to nap time. All of a sudden, for no reason we can decipher, she decides to stop napping.

We never know when this will happen; there is no warning for the Nap Strike. It usually lasts for a week or two and then she goes back to her regularly scheduled napping.

I have had her on a nap schedule since she was four months old. If it seems that she is needing more time between waking and naps, we adjust the schedule to fit. Currently, we have about three or so hours between waking and nap time.

Honestly, the weeks during Nap Strike are some of the hardest weeks of my job as a parent. She screams. She cries. She will hold in her poop and wait to go once I've put her in the crib. (Those are the fun days.)

I know she's not ready to do away with napping just yet; she becomes a very grumpy little girl on the days without naps. It seems to me that she likes to test the waters just to see if Mommy is still enforcing the nap rule.

(Note to my daughter: I am.)

Do your children have any  "odd" sleeping patterns/habits? Please tell me I'm not alone.
