"On top of Old Smokey, all covered with blood ..."

From Newsvine.com:  A student in Georgia has been suspended from her high school for singing a threatening song.  Beth Ann Cox, 16, a junior at Peachtree Ridge High School, claims, however, that she wasn't singing so much has humming -- and merely told the lyrics to a fellow student when someone asked.  She denies directing the lyrics at her teacher, Phil Carroll.

"I'd had a song stuck in my head all day, like the tune of it," she said. "This kid in front of me asked me about the song. So I told him the words. I didn't say them loudly."

The lyrics?

On top of Ol' Smokey / all covered with blood / I shot my poor teacher / with a .44 slug.

The story is further complicated by the fact that the student and teacher didn't get along.  "We feel that Dr. Carroll has some kind of a vendetta out for our daughter. And he used this to take a stand against her," said Suzanne Cox, Beth Ann's mother.

Goodness.  I don't know what to think about this.  On one hand:  kids sing stupid stuff all the time.  On the other hand, after Columbine ...

...I just don't know.
