Saving grace: a smell-proof diaper disposal

The other day we ran out of refills for Nolan's diaper disposal unit. Luckily, we had an extra bucket downstairs, a plain Jane pail I'd purchased as a backup when we had a diaper station on each floor.Within one poopy diaper change, the smell in Nolan's room was appalling.
Is he eating something different, we wondered, pinching our noses, is it that organic squash?
But no - it was the plain old smell of poopy diapers, a smell we hadn't noticed for several months because of the quiet efficiency of our diaper disposal system. The bags mask smells so well they're not noticeable, even in Nolan's teeny nursery. As a bonus, one refill pack (approximate cost $ 25.00) lasted us nine months
Today we went to the store and bought more refills for our Dekor and our nostrils have been applauding us since.
The Dekor Diaper disposal had been working so well we hadn't noticed it - which in this case, is a very good thing. It's highly recommended if you wish for your house not to smell like winter squash gone very, very wrong.

A month ago, I would have seconded this particular diaper disposal. However, we've had ours for just over a year and right around the 12 month mark one of the flaps started to hang loose. It doesn't snap back up to seal the odors. It could just be something that needs tightening, but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Really, really smelly... I'm now of the belief that none of them truly work.

We have used this system for 4 years now and still love it. We have one upstairs and one downstairs and use them for stinky things other than diapers too.

We have twins and we went through two of these in a matter of three months. The flaps broke on both of them. I would not recommend this to anyone.

We love our Dekor too. That thing rocks! I feared it wouldn't hold up to the stink once we started solid food, but he's 10 mos and so far so good.

Question: do you think this would work well for storing cloth diapers waiting for a wash? I've been forced to do most of my shopping/registering online and while the disposable-based systems all look cool . . . I just need a dry pail to store used cloth diapers in.

We've used the Diaper Champ since our duaghter was a newborn & it's only had problems when it gets too full. We have one upstairs (the original, almost three year old now) and one downstairs. And two kids in diapers.
The advantage for me is that it takes plain old shopping bags (Target's work best)-- no need to buy special refills -- but one lasting nine months? That's not bad.

We've had two Dekors (one upstairs, one downstairs) since our baby was born nearly fourteen months ago, and both are still going strong. We like them a lot. I guess we were lucky -- it sounds like some unfortunate parents must have gotten lemons.

We love our Dekor. It has held up for 4 years and many diapers. We've had to have the flaps replaced twice because they broke. We just emailed the manufacturer and they replaced them without a any problem. I recommend it to everyone!

Why not just use cloth diapers? they are so easy I wish I could convert everyone. sorry I had to....
hp,
We have one of those cheap diaper pails from target, I can't remember what kind. It only smells when you open it to put one in. It also has a spot in the lid for diaper pail scent disks, however, we have not used those yet. It seems like you could use it for either kind of diaper.

We, too, have a Dekor. The flaps also broke around the 12 month mark (the springs inside broke). I will say we dropped a lot more diapers in ours than most for several months (my son would have between 15-20 poopy diapers a day before we figured out the extent of his food allergies). We removed the flaps and are still using it, and it still works really well.
Knowing that the flaps can be replaced for free (thanks Louise!), I'm thrilled!

davidf: Thanks, the Target cheapo one is actually what I'm currently registered for.
My real worry is my poop-obsessed dog. He finds feces of all kinds to be fascinating--from dog poop, to goose poop, to deer poop. I've heard too many stories of diaper-stealing dogs . . .

David F -- cloth diapers aren't really a good option for many city-dwellers. And, despite all the bitter argumentation, in the global scheme of things, the environmental impact of either cloth or disposables is small and the difference between the types insigificant.

I've been using the Dekor+ for almost a year and I LOVE it! I love that I can empty it each trash day and just pull out as much bag as I need.

hp your welcome...
Matthew,
I was thinking at the time more of the savings, I think I've seen numbers around $3000. Yah, I don't live in the city. And I do have a washer and dryer at my house so I could see it being diff. for some people. It just makes more sense to me that I am keeping those chemicals off my daughter and that on trash day I still only have one or two bags of garbage.
I don't understand your last statement about the difference being insignifigant? I am not trying to start any arguments, sorry I just did not understand.
This is by no means a poke or prod but I thought disposables were the largest landfill contributers in the states?
thanks for the response I need to be straightend out often.
David the f was a typooooo

We got the Diaper Champ 3 1/2 years ago, when my daughter was born. I buy the scented tall kitchen trash bags to use in it. When, my son was born and I had 2 in diapers, I just started using the black garbage bags to hold all the diapers. The Champ is still going strong! No special bags, no accidentally turning the sausage bag the wrong way ( Diaper Genie).
