My daughter, the World Cup football fan
Categories: Development
The World Cup of soccer has begun, and no one is more excited that my daughter, Alex. Our homeland, Trinidad & Tobago, has a team in the World Cup this year for the first time in its history, rendering it the smallest country ever to be in the tournament. As a result, we're in the throes of World Cup fever, and Alex has caught it bad.She already knows the words to the theme song of the team, the Soca Warriors, and sings it with abandon. Whenever she sees the national flag (which, these days, is all the time), she yells "SOCA WARRIORS!" And she constantly proclaims her love of all things football.
Thing is, Alex has been kicking a football around before she could walk. When she was about 9 months old, she'd pull herself up to standing position using us as support, and then pull us toward any nearby ball, and would kick it with surprising strength. These days, in our home, I'm constantly dodging her kicking a small football around.
So, of course, it makes me wonder -- do I have a future Mia Hamm or Brandy Chastain on my hands? Who knows -- but it's nice to dream.
Out of curiosity: do any of you with older, athletic children remember them demonstrating their skills at a young age?

My daughter Michaela is 2.5 years old and she is the same. She loves soccer and will actually sit and watch parts of games. Whenever we go outside she runs to the ball in the yard and wants us to kick it around with her. She is amazingly coordinated for her age and will run and kick it like she means it. So cool that there are other little girls out there that are like her!

One of my friend's kids, Madison, is four, and she's REALLY athletic. Kicking balls, throwing things, you name it, she does is. Soccer/football/that game where you kick the ball into a net, especially.
Good luck, Alex!!! :)

LOL! This article was so timely! We too are in the throes of World Cup mania! My 6 yo Isabella absolutely loves soccer. She is currently sporting a tshirt with the words Soccer Bug and a cute little lady bug atop a soccer ball. I will have to peel it off her body tonight to wash it tonight so she can wear it again tomorrow after school. She loves England (she thinks Beckham is cute and a good player) and yes we have seen Bend it like Beckham about a gagillion times. We are also rooting for Mexico which beat Iran today. I wish more girls were interested sports of all kinds. I was and it kept me focused and taught me a great many lessons and has helped me infinitely in my adult life.
