Benefits of Vitamin D for moms
Filed under: Just For Moms, Health & Safety: Babies, Nutrition: Health
It looks like many moms might want to add Vitamin D to their lists of must have vitamins. Recent research has shown that Vitamin D ease aches and pains, strengthen bones, might slow down cancer and prevent diseases as varied as Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. For a pill that was once thought to just help prevent rickets, the potential in this vitamin is huge. Vitamin D has been shown to help with the absorption of calcium and helps to slow the growth of cells. The cell growth is key because it indicates that the vitamin could help with cancer prevention.
As the potential for Vitamin D benefits grows, the concern that most people do not get enough on a daily basis also increases. Vitamin D is the only vitamin the body produces on its own, with the help of exposure to sunshine; however researchers are betting that most people do not make enough to satisfy the body's needs. It is also abundant in salmon and mackerel and in fortified foods such as milk, orange juice and cereals.
For all of the benefits, those most beneficial to women are likely to be the added absorption of calcium and the cell growth retarding factors. As we age, women need more calcium to help maintain bone density to prevent osteoporosis. And we can all use any and all help in the cancer prevention department. It makes me want to snack on some salmon and wash it down with a glass of fortified orange juice.
