Elmo helps explain war

A Sesame Street video has been created to help explain deployment to children who have a parent in Afghanistan or Iraq.

The DVD features Elmo and his parents who are preparing for Elmo's dad to be deployed. It is available in Spanish and English, and will be handed out for free late this summer.

Approximately half a million American children under five belong to families with one or both parents on active duty in the US. The video helps kids understand what Daddy is doing so far away from home, says a US government undersecretary.

I think this is a good idea, Sesame Street is such a familiar and trusted source for kids. Perhaps the familiarity of Elmo can take some of the fear away from the separation of family and connotations of the word war. But I'm not convinced there is any perfect way to explain war to kids because I'm not sure I understand it myself.
