Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck moving to Boston with Violet
Filed under: Work Life, Development/Milestones: Babies, Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Media
Us Weekly reported on Wednesday that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have decided to raise their daughter Violet in Boston, rather than Los Angeles. Reportedly, they want to provide her as normal an upbringing as possible. I think I'd have to agree that they can accomplish more easily in Boston than they can in California.I wonder how it works though, if your career is primarily based on one coast and you choose to live on another. Once you are an established actor, does it really matter where you live? Do so many of them live in LA because of the industry? Or because they just like it there? I went out to LA for a wedding last summer (I live in small town Missouri). I admit that before I went, I thought, "Why do those actors need to be paid so much money? That is ridiculous!" But when I got out there, I understood. In order to have any privacy at all, you have to have a ton of money there.
So, I guess it makes sense: Live in Boston, and fly to LA for business lunches. It's not like they have to pay LA prices to live in Boston-- so they can probably afford the plane tickets pretty easily.
I'm just guessing.
Where would you live if money were no object? Would you live somewhere like LA? I think I would, yes.

Lots of actors don't live in L.A. Johnny Depp (France), Ewan McGregor (England and France) come to mind. I think a lot of them do because they think they have to, or their agents convince them that if they don't they won't get work.

However, Boston is pretty expensive to live in, so I imagine they are choosing to live here for other reasons than the cost of living. Since Ben is from Cambridge, maybe they would like to be near family, just like other people.

We both love Cambridge/Boston and have often talked about moving there, but because my husband works in the entertainment industry at a level that requires actually living here, we're pretty much stuck in Los Angeles.
But you know what? L.A. is not at all a bad place to be stuck. I get itchy feet simply because I object, in principle, to living in the same town forever -- and because I would love to have a bigger house and a huge yard. But I appreciate the things we *do* have here -- weather that allows us to enjoy the outdoors most months out of the year, and lots of cultural diversity chief among them. There are plenty of "normal," "non-plastic" people here -- the majority of Los Angeles residents, amazingly enough, have jobs outside the entertainment industry.
That said -- I think that Ben & Jen are probably making a good decision. Los Angeles is a perfectly good place to raise non-famous children like mine, but if you're famous, I would think that it would be a huge drag to have your children photographed each time you take them to the park. Children shouldn't have to worry about paparazzi.

He said he was really impressed that no one in the place bugged them at all and they were generally treated like normal people. Bostonians may have a reputation for being standoffish, but hey, if you're a celebrity family, I imagine that respect feels really, really nice.
