Do you have "Mom" hair?
I have to admit that right now, I am a little obsessed with my hair. I used to have really long hair. When I left my husband five years ago, I started chopping at it. I realize now that cutting hair is something a lot of people do when they are changing relationships. I was being something of a cliche. Anyway. I engaged in a four year cycle of cutting my hair short and growing it out again, which is familiar to at least one or two of you, I am sure. I had decided about three years to grow it out, and so I made the error of getting a perm. This damaged my hair and made me look about ten years older than I was. I went to visit a friend of mine who cuts hair for a living, and she took one look at my bad perm and cut it all out. A full year of growth was gone. I was so upset to lose the year of growth that I didn't take any time to enjoy the short hair. Everybody loved it except me. (See picture-- that is me with short hair).
This Spring, I finally had my wish: My hair was down to my collar bone. And I noticed that it was curly! I have never had curly hair before! But lots of other women have told me that their hair started to curl after they had kids, too. But it doesn't even curl decently! It curls like the bad perm: Straight on the top and sides, and curly in the back. So, earlier this summer, I had a couple of inches cut off and got an inverted bob. About two weeks after that, I had it cut up to my chin, and made the bob more severe. But now, I am thinking that it needs to be cut really short. I just feel like there is too much hair. I think my husband (re-married for one year now!) is going to kill me after having to hear for all these years about how much I really wanted long hair.
If I cut my hair, does that mean I have "Mom"hair? Am I becoming another sort of cliche? The woman in her late thirties who cuts off her hair because she is too busy and too lazy to maintain long hair anymore?
How do you wear your hair? And do you obsess about it, too, or am I just nuts?

Caitlin said...I gave up obsessing about my hair when I was 12. I have super curly hair, and I decided that getting up 2 hours early to straighten it to match the $10 straight haircut the stylist always gave me.
I did have a chin length haircut for awhile, but I think the fact that it was purple or fire engine red exempted me from mom hair. Short hair is way more work for me, than long hair is. I have to do some amount of straightening, otherwise I end up looking like shirley temple. These days I usually do a ponytail or a french twist to get it out of my face and my toddler's grasp.

Ceallach said...Funny how everyone thinks that short hair is easier than long....It takes me less time to do my butt length hair, than all my short-haired friends....but that is me.
But then i have wavy to curly hair that would require 15-20 minutes of styling time to tame if it was not long enough to weight it into wavy only. Because the First Law of Curly Hair is that it will always curl in the wrong direction. Second Law is that it will always look better the days that you don't do anything or go anywhere.
Got news for the author....even curly hair hair will go flat on top with curls on bottom....the weight of the hair and the oils do it.....With longer hair, the ends tend to dry, while the roots tend to oily.....figuring that out is major, so I get a normal to oily shampoo, and a dry conditioner for the areas that they treat.

The last time I cut my hair short was my grade 8 graduation - and only because my mom talked me into it. I hated it!
I have sworn that I will be a little old lady with long hair! I always wear it down to the middle of my back, and loose. I will only tie it up if I am so hot, I feel like I am melting!
I never do more than just wash it and brush it, nothing fancy for me. I am working on getting it trimmed about every 3-4 months - surprisingly, it grows longer if I do.
As a natural red-head, I feel fortunate that my hair doesn't look grey even now, just more like a strawberry blonde. :)

Stacy said...I have long hair with some bangs to cover up my large forehead ;) I like to hide behind my hair which isn't always a good thing. . . however at my daughters 6th birthday party several of the moms were talking about having long hair and saying how their husbands like long hair but after having kids and being a mom there was no reason to have long hair. . .to say the least it made me feel a little awkward!
I don't really obsess or worry about it but I would love to have a 'style' but it seems like so much work in the mornings and $$ to keep up the style with the hair dresser.
