Oprah Winfrey names the girls to attend her free school
Filed under: Development/Milestones: Babies, Life & Style, Media
You know, I want to believe that Oprah is just all hype, but she's making it really impossible to. Ecorazzi (a blog on the latest in green gossip -- how cool is that?) is reporting that Oprah has named the first 73 girls to attend a school in South Africa that she helped build. According to the BBC, "it will eventually teach 450 girls who show academic talent and leadership but whose families cannot fund schooling. The school aims to employ advanced education techniques, and communication technology that will allow Winfrey to teach from Chicago."Now THAT's a great story. Congratulations to the girls, and congratulations to Oprah. I love news of people making the world a better place.

Sheena said...That is good news. I do, however, wonder about the other half. That is, what about the girls who might not show academic promise and leadership, nor do their families have the funds to make things happen for them? Who helps those kids? Are those with neither money nor the supposed potential doomed for a harder life? Who helps the children who need someone to break them out of their cycle? I wonder about that anywhere in the world since it "takes a village..."

I do wish she'd stop gracing every single cover of her namesake magazine though. :)

*sigh* It's official. I like and admire the woman. You heard it here first.

What an opportunity to be able to observe such intelligence on a daily and monthly basis. If she makes mistakes so what. I just wish more celebrities would step up to the plate to use their persuasive power to correct the failing education system in poor neighborhoods ,especially in all the big cities.
