Lilliput playhouses: When money is not a problem
Categories: Celeb Kids, Life & Style
I remember how extravagant I felt when we bought our then 1-year-old a playhouse. A playhouse! For a toddler! We got it used, but still. She has a playhouse!Well, after seeing these extravagant playhouses, I don't feel like such a spender. I was watching one of those VH1 shows on all the incredibly ridiculous swag that the ultra-wealthy buy for their children when I saw the Lilliput Playhouses.
For just shy of $5,000, your little star can have her very own Storybook Bungalow, complete with a real doorbell and skylights. If you're in the mood for spending extra, you can always have a custom home built so your child can have her own pint-sized version of her parents' house.
What bothers me most about these types of playhouses (besides the fact that your 2-year-old has one ridiculously expensive TOY) is that Middle America, which is seemingly becoming obsessed with high-priced baby items that were once only available to a select few (Hello, Bugaboo!) will want to fork out the cash.
They need to remember that this company's clientele includes people like Russell Simmons, who owns the $8,900 Cotton Candy model on the main page. Since that's the case, you're not really keeping up with the Joneses, Suzy McBugaboo. You're keeping up with the Simmonses.

Try looking at poshtots.com for a real kick (in the gut). Can you say $87,510?

I actually think they're pretty cool.
But I can build one for much less than that myself.

The swingsets sold by Rainbow Play Systems and the like can cost more than a very nice new car. Ridiculous.

A playhouse was always high on the list of things I wanted when I was a kid, but I never got one. I had two friends with play houses though, both were built by their parents. For things which amounted to boxxes with a door and a few windows they provided a lot of fun, and kept us outside in the backyard for extended periods of time. They were also good for sleepovers up till we were teens and stopped having sleep overs. If someone wants to pay several thousand dollars for a prettier play house for their kids then they are entitled to, and if I had kids and the money to spend I probably would get one myself.
