Katrina -- One year later

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies

It was one year ago that Hurricane Katrina caused the levees protecting New Orleans to fail. Katrina is responsible for nearly two thousand deaths (another 700 are still missing) and an estimated 81 billion dollars in damage. It is the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. History and the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. A year later, little progress has been made in rebuilding New Orleans and many families have no plans to return.

Not everyone need worry about hurricanes. The likelihood of a hurricane hitting San Francisco, for example, is very small. The likelihood of a major earthquake, on the other hand, is rather high. It doesn't matter where you live; Mother Nature will have a way of getting you. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, floods... the list goes on. Where ever you live, there's something and you learn to live with it. There is a lot you can do to be prepared if something does happen.

A friend of mine has made a pretty serious hobby out of disaster preparation, ever since Katrina. I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some of what he's learned and the resources he's accumulated.
