Everyone loves a Cheetah (Girl)
Categories: Teens & tweens, That's Entertainment
If you're a parent of a young girl, you've probably heard of the Cheetah Girls. Personally, I didn't realize they were that big a deal until I read this article, pointing out how big they really are.$300 for a pair of concert tickets to see the group? Heck, I didn't even know you could see the Cheetah Girls in concert!
So what's the deal with the Cheetah Girls? What makes them so popular? Some parents point how they're "normal" girls that don't dress trashy and have family values.
They have completed two movies, based on a book of the same name. They have a fan site coming out soon and, of course, the concerts. Much like every other band or movie out there, the Cheetah Girls have a "more personal" MySpace website.
Do your kids like the Cheetah Girls? Do you? Would you shell out $300 for them to see a concert?

Wait, wasn't Britney Spears the pop star who represented family values?

I know nothing about "Cheetah Girls" other than Raven Simone was in the movies (and I think she is not in the spin-off group, is that right?). I find her very grating and annoying so I think I would personally steer clear just for that reason. (Have been irritated by her since she was a wee annoying child actress.)The way you describe them though I think they sound better than Pussycat Dolls and Bratz!! (Just going off what you are saying again as I have no experience of them or their music.)

I'll have to ask Elcie. I know the name but not much else. We're a little distant from the concert venue and no, I probably wouldn't fork over $300 (each) for any concert.
Elcie (13)says upon being asked just now:
"They are a band, they're really good. You should consider watching their movies. They're out on dvd."
I think that last was a hint.

Meant to say $300 for concert tickets though. Also I'm not personally a fan of Disney stuff like this - but I realise a lot of kids are and, again, it sounds more innocent than some other stuff marketed to kids out there.
I went to a New Kids concert at 12 and wouldn't see harm in my kids going to a suitable concert at that age with parental supervision. I had to pay for that ticket myself from my paper route but of course it only cost something like $25 (which I thought was big bucks!)

I can't stand these girls. It was convied by another spoiled tv kid who's parents are producers or in the industry. Raven has no talent and I wish her daddy would stop making shows for her.
It really makes me angery when I hear about thes poor rich kids who just want attention from mommy ( the basis for most of these movies). Or they are suppose to be poor but they are wearing designer clothes????

I keep thinking that by the time Little-E gets old enough to be into pop music, etc, I'll still be cool (my consolation prize for having her when I was so young).
And then I read about a group like the Cheetah Girls. If I ALREADY think pop music/girl groups like this are stupid, I can't imagine how out of touch I'll be in 10 years.
Crap.

I love the Cheetah Girls and just took my 10 yo daughter to their concert in Portland a couple of weeks ago. I paid $38.50 for each ticket. I would not have paid $300 though. I love their music - it's nice dance music with a nice beat but only positive lyrics. No sexual lyrics or dance moves. I think they are great for young girls. You can still be cute and where cute clothes w/o being trashy. And I enjoyed the movies as well.

My 2.5 year old son does not watch much TV, but already knows who the Cheetah Girls are and is in love. It is bizarre, in fact, he's already stereotyping. Yesterday my husband had the football game on, and my son pointed to the chearleaders and gleefully yelled "Cheetah Girls!" (Maybe I shouldn't leave him alone with Dad or Grandpa anymore... ;)
And NO, I would not pay $300 for my son to leer at them! I guess I've become a stodgy grown-up, but I also think the Cheetah Girls are a little too sophisticated and suggestive to be all over the Disney channel.

Jonathon, I feel your pain! But I have always hated pop music. (OK- I did like the New Kids and went to a concert but I was in 6th grade. I didn't know any better!)
So I have redefined "cool" to make myself feel better. My 5yo doesn't know who the Cheetah Girls are (and neither do I) but she loves jamming to the White Stripes and Phish!
And $300 is way too much money for concert tickets!

Jonathon, if you never believe another word I say, believe this.
No matter how hard you try, how much of their language you learn, or how much you know about their music and the fad of the week, you will never be "cool" to your teenage kids. Never. If you try too hard, you will be an embarrassment.

I love the Cheetah Girls and I am 21 years old! My daughter is 20 months old and loves their music and the movies almost as much as Elmo! Ask for the Britney Spears comment, the Cheetah Girls were made by the Disney Channel, I think they will stay like that until they split. If only Raven could be a part of the group, but it isn't possible when she has her own musical career.
As for the question, no I would not spend $300 for a ticket, my daughter can watch it on the disney channel!
But if the fans pay it Disney with charge it.
CHEETAH GIRLS ARE AWSOME!!
