"I saw your nanny" blog
Anyone who has ever had someone take care of their child most likely has wondered how the caregiver acted when the parent isn't looking. Now there's a way to see if your nanny is one of the few of millions spotted in public and submitted to the I Saw Your Nanny Blog.
For example, if you live in Washington Heights and your 5-year-old is named Jenna, well, your nanny isn't interacting with or watching her at the park.
I think this site is interesting in concept, but since most of the reports on there are about New York City, it won't be of much help to Suzy Q Public in Miami. Of course, this being the Internet, people have to get in arguments about something. Just read a few of the comments, I swear some of them seem to be "nanny vs mommy."
Either way, it reminds me that we really need to make sure that the people who are watching our children are really caring about them.
Thanks to Marge for the tip!

I have to ask this question, though. Twice, Polish nannies were mentioned. How does one single out a Polish woman so easily? I am full-blooded Polish, but I have reddish hair and green eyes with freckles. My spoken Polish has been often mistaken for Russian. Are there really that many Polish nannies? Just curious.

If you have so little info about your nanny that such a site would be useful, you should be keeping a close eye on things yourself. I presume that the people who are writing on this site are at these places with their own children, right? So who's watching their kids while they're watching the other nannies? Wonder if any of them see themselves wrote up for ignoring THEIR charges?

Every so often something like this is posted: "Anyone know a little boy named X, blond hair, playing at Y park this morning with a spanish-speaking nanny? I have some concerns I would like to discuss with his mother." I always wonder how these turn out - is the mother receptive, is the nanny fired? So many people rave about their "wonderful" nannies but have no clue what really goes on. As a stay at home mom, I see it all the time (and yes, I know they are nannies.) One "wonderful" nanny wouldn't take her 2 year old charge out of his stroller at a playgroup because "it is too much work to chase him", yet she was SO friendly and warm to the other moms and nannies. I admit, I'm a wimp - I never brought this to the attention of the mom. I'd love to see a site like this specific to my area.

Heidi said...I love the idea BUT it's scary to me to have this information out there where anyone could see it. Location, physical description of a child and the Nanny, the child's name AND the fact that the Nanny isn't closely watching the child in many of these cases. Seems like an abducter's dream...

I think the people who are making the observations are mothers and nannies who are in kid places (ie indoor playparks and out on playgrounds) with their own children and charges. If you are trying to grasp at ways to describe a stranger, I would guess you could listen to thier voice. I don't know if I would know a Polish accent but I know an Irish and Jamaican and English. Who knows? Maybe the poster was polish. The in fighting is insane!

In the area I reside, I could not work if I did not have a nanny. So I hire a nanny. I don't mistreat her. I pay her well. She is very fond of my family-of this I am certain. I have friends who pay their nannies twelve dollars an hour cash and don't provide insurance, they have friends that tell them that is "too much for a nanny", I tell those friends, "it isn't enough". I pay my nanny on the books and she loves her job as much as we love having her. The only way she would appear on that nanny blog is as a good I know this because although I feel I am generous (and as generous as I can be with my nanny and her benefits) I have friends and neighbors who can afford to be still more generous. A good nanny is always in danger of being poached. A good nanny is known by the other mothers and other sitters and I am certain a good nanny is not at all threatened by a blog like the I saw your nanny blog.
