Firesale for cats: $3,950 each
If you or your child are allergic to cats, there might just be a bargain for you! ALLERCA Inc., says it has managed to breed the world's first hypoallergenic cats and is selling them for $3,950 each! People who are allergic to cats and buy one of these will not experience sneezing, red and itchy eyes or asthma -- except in very acute cases. The company says that as soon as the news got out people rushed to place orders and now there is a waiting list. According to the BBC, the company tested thousands of cats, looking for those tiny few that do not have glycoprotein Fel d1. Glycoprotein Fel d1 is what triggers allergic reactions in humans -- it can be found in the fur, pelt, saliva, serum, urine, mucous, salivary glands, and hair roots of the cat. On finding a decent number of cats that did not carry glycoprotein Fel d1, the scientists selectively bred them. The kittens of these selectively chosen cats do not produce human allergic reactions -- they are hypoallergenic cats. The company says its cats are friendly, playful and affectionate, and are available in several coat colors and patterns. The coat is "medium-long, with low maintenance and minimal shedding." At $3,950 per pop, I'm sure you can convince your child to have another pet rather than a cat. The fact the company has a waiting list for the cats suggested that the old saying about suckers being born every minute remains valid.

John said...I have been an animal lover my entire life and I have owned pets that while they did not cost anywhere near $4k, did cost more than most people would have considered reasonable or sane but they were worth it to me. People who show horses can easily spend $20-$30k or more on a well bred, highly trained show horse and I'm sure those people don't consider it a waste of money. They are doing what they love and have the money to afford it.
I have visited the Allerca website and they claim to be working on creating two other hypoallergenic pets but they did not say what they were. It also said the kittens are shipped via private jet directly to an Allerca certified vet closest to the buyer at a cost of $995 and the new owner picks up the kitten at the vet's office. It did not say if the purchase price included this fee or not. All kittens are spayed or neutered prior to leaving Allerca's breeding facility so there can be no unauthorized breeding of the kittens when they leave Allerca for their new homes.
I'm sure as they are producing more of these kittens and the people who can afford to buy them get them the demand will start to decline and the price will start to come down to become more reasonable but they're never going to be free or cheap by most people's standards. Also, I don't know if you can obtain a patent on a live animal so other companies may get into the game and start breeding these cats as well which will increase the supply and eventually reduce the price.

Who are you to judge what people spend their money on? If they are good law abiding people - its none of your business where they get their money or where they put it!
I have always had a cat in my home since I was 4 years old. I paid thousands to save the life of my cat who had cancer and I'd do it again.
They bring a comfort not matched by any other animal. I love my dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs too, but they are all different from one another.
If you want the cat BUY IT.

renee said...i have 3 indoor cats [and 2 outdoor cats that adopted us]. i sneeze all the time. i've been thru the allergy shots and everything. But i couldn't live w/out my cats. They are a part of my family. It would be nice to be able to afford hypoallergenic cats [tho i wouldn't trade mine for one, i'd just add them, lol] it turns out my son who just left for college was more allergic to them than we realized. If i had the money to buy one of these cats for him, he'd already have one!!! He loves cats, but i don't see him being able to have one again unless something is done about his allergies. They are expensive and no one wants to take away from helping charities, but money is just money [no i don't have any] if having a little furbaby you can live with makes you happy, and you can afford it, i say go for it!! i would.

I am estatic! Now she can have one..and yes, she can afford it too. Both my girls have studied long and hard and have overcome many obstacles to achieve their goals. Me? Well, I have THREE cats, I am NOT allergic, and I am the proud single mom of 2 lawyers! We all had kitties going through our tribulations, and there is nothing better than coming home and hugging your warm, loving cat after a hard day. BRAVO!

Theresa said...I don't think this is stupid at all, though I'd definitely wait for prices on these cats to go down. As someone who's had asthma her whole life, basically, I've never gotten the chance to have a dog or a cat like I'd want to have because they'd give me asthma attacks. So it's nice to know that if I wanted a cat that wouldn't make me have an asthma attack--and I had the money--I could get one.

That said, although I can't see spending this kind of money on a cat, I really can't criticize someone who does. Look at how much money people spend on cell phone services, nights out on the town, cigarettes, alcohol....

Yori said...This is for Tammy anyone who has $4000 to spend on a stupid cat, lol, why in hell would they want to spend it on charity. I know plenty of people who are fraudulently using Welfare, Jiggetts, and Section 8. Our hard earned money is already being spent on Charity called Taxes for Welfare etc. If you don't believe me come to my kneck of the city and I'll show you the 2 -3 incomes families have and how they have Welfare, sell their social security, traffic immigrants, and what nots. Everyone has a right to spend their hard earned money as they see fit. I have 4 stupid dogs, 4 stupid cats, & 4 stupid birds. But they're mine and I love them.

Noreen Ailes said...Actually , I am terribly allergic to cats, dogs and most birds, and so are my kids, we would LOVE to have a pet, besides a fish & hamster. SORRY folks, I would be first in line to buy one of these even at $5000 a pop!! It is worth it to have a pet for myself & children, a pet that can actually interact with us, and be affectionate back. Yes, I even donate to charities. People spend their money on all sorts of foolish things,(to much to list here),having a loving pet is not one of them, neither is having the opportunity to own a pet even at $5000 a pop.

Yeah I'm sure you can find something better to do with it. Let me guess; like buy something stupid and inanimate to lavash yourself with. You are such a neandrathal!

Kristina said...First (even though I realize this article is posted on the "Blogging Baby" site), the majority of people wanting to own these cats are probably adult allergy sufferers who have been denied the pleasure of a cat their whole lives. Second, from what I've seen in the current day and age, I'm not at all certain any modern parent CAN convince their child to have another pet, or would even be willing to try. One whine or wail out of them, and $3950 a pop or no, the parents will cave in a heartbeat. If a kid is willing to have even the merest hint of a tantrum over something, it's theirs.

Joe said...I grew up with a cat and they are the best pets! My wife and daughter are very allergic to animals. My wife was told that the only pet she could ever have is a cow. $4,000 for my family to have a pet that doesn't trigger allergies, YOU BET! It's a cheep price for a child to experience what I did as a kid.

Nancy Verne said...I have seen and held this breed of cat. I did not know that they were hypoallergenic, that is a plus. They are beautiful and can run 35 miles per hr. You walk them on a leash. They are very exotic, friendly, and have the personality of a dog more so than a cat (according to the cat's owner I talked with). I would love to have the $3,950 to buy one. I love, love, love cats!!!

That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of.. If you have allergies and want a cat, go to the damn DR and get a prescription for your allergies.. and go and adopt a cat..

Lynn said...I personally wouldn't pay this much for a kitten, but I'm not a huge cat lover I am a dog person. That said if we sold our dog today we could get upwards of $6000 for her (it's been offered), we got her as a puppy for $700 but she is now a champion collie...so I ask really like others pointed out what's the difference? If you love something it's worth it! Although I hope there is some sort of "Guarantee", if you turn out to be allergic to this cat will they give you back at least part of your purchase price and find the kitty a new home?

Evelyn Birdwell said...My first reaction: WHY? Well, I guess something like, I love my spouse, my spouse loves the cat, I hate taking the medicine so I will build a cat I am not allergic to...
Which spawns the next question: HOW? well, I have heard that if you can think it up, someone can do it. I thought about getting rich and sure enough someone else did it.
I love cats.

Shelby said...This is amazing! My boyfreind is deathly allergic to my kitty and a cat like this would be perfect! Since he came around Sophie has to be bathed regularly, wiped down with dander control stuff, we vacuum constantly, sweep daily, it's never ending! It was really hard for her to learn that she didn't rule the house anymore. She couldn't sleep in my bed, get on the furniture or the table, (she did anything she wanted she's the princess.) We even have to wash our hands after every time we touch her. The cost for soaps, lotions, cat dander shampoo, allergy remedies both for Sophie and my boyfreind when added all up is way more than $4000. Im excited, as a cat lover, that when Sophie is one day gone there is hope now for me to have another cat!
