Are your kids buying Cocaine at the grocery store?

From the San Jose Mercury News: Cocaine is the name of one of the more, umm, hard core energy drinks. Brought to us by a company called Redux Beverages, this drink has lots of sugar and caffeine which its creative marketers call "energy."

The newspaper story is about 7-Eleven deciding to ban the drink from their shelves. Even though 7-Elevens are franchises, corporate spokeswoman Margaret Chabris says that the company has notified franchise owners that it does want them to sell this product.

Generally, I follow a live and let live sort of philosophy. But, in this case I think the company has overshot their goal of appearing edgy and cool and are instead promoting drug use to young adults and teens. It's no secret that scores of teens are depending on energy drinks to get through their days. In my opinion, joking about drugs normalizes them and makes them that much more acceptable.

What do you think? (I can't wait to read these comments!!)
