Video game where Jews and Atheists must be killed or converted due for Christmas
Filed under: Media, Toys, Gadgets, That's Entertainment
A video game about a Christian militia slaughtering Jewish and atheist New Yorkers who won't be converted in the name of a particular brand of Christianity will be on the shelves of more than 10,000 American retailers in time for the Christmas season, including Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, GameStop, EB Games, CompUSA, Amazon.com, Costco and numerous others. The video game is a spinoff of the wildly successful collaborative novels about "the rapture" by conservative fundamentalist minister Tim Lahaye and the guy who used to write the dialogue for the Gil Thorpe comic strip, Jerry Jenkins.
In Left Behind: Eternal Forces, kids will assume the role of a member of a "Christian" gang wandering the streets of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, killing or converting as many Jews, Atheists, and other unsavory types in the employ of the Anti-Christ as possible to get to the next level. If the heathen won't convert, the character can kill them. The company is offering a free demonstration model to churches. "We see it as a beacon of light that could shine in the dark world of video games," said Jerome Mikulich, "director of outreach ministries" for the company. "The most important thing is that it helps kids realize there is power in the spirit world, and that by praying they can endure and get through their real-life situations." Praying, and putting a shotgun in the mouth of Jews. Just like all those chapters in the gospel where Jesus preaches that the way to salvation is busting a cap into the ass of those who won't convert.

Rachel Mosteller said...The one thing I'm confused about regarding this last comment is "who will be left." Well, for many Christians, those who do not accept Jesus as their Savior are the ones that will be left.
So, basically, even though you are "born" a Christian, it doesn't necessarily mean you are in the sense they are talking about.
While I have not read Left Behind, I am a Christian and, from what I understand, this is just not singling out those of the Jewish faith. The premise of the entire series is that if you do not accept Jesus, that when the final days come and all the Christians "disappear," you will be "left behind."

pbl said...I was just going to say something similar, Rachel. It is also my understanding, from those in my family who are "born-again" that only they will be saved (or, taken up to heaven) when the rapture happens. In this sense, even though I am a baptised Catholic, and believe in one Baptism (which can only happen once in your lifetime, although it can happen during any part of your life), according to these family members, I, and anyone else not "born again" (i.e., made an adult and informed decision to accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior and either be baptised or re-baptised) am NOT saved, and will be "left behind" during the rapture. So you can't even say that *all* the Christians will disappear, as most of us who are *not* born-again will still be going along when this so-called rapture happens.
No matter how you spin it, it's a narrow, self-righteous and dare I say fundamentalist way to look at the world, and pretty much opposite of Jesus of Nazareth's (and mainstream contemporary Christianities) ideology.

J.D. said...this isn't a video game where the main character calmly counsels some lost Christians and tries to get them to accept jesus christ as their personal lord and savior before the earth opens up an swallows them whole. here is a screen shot from this "nonviolent, spiritual" video game:

are you f&*%ing kidding me? Why are y'all so eager to defend this? I'm not making this up. Here's a jewish publication addressing the jewish angle:
http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/newscontent.php3?artid=13151
as I said in the original post, this is a game about killing "Jewish and atheist New Yorkers who won't be converted in the name of a particular brand of Christianity." Okay, we'll add stubborn non-born-again Catholics to the list. Does that f&^%$ing make it any better?

Belinda said...I agree with LS, I only buy the violent games where I am killing the "bad guys". :-) But I am also 21 years old, my daughter won't be playing them until she is old enough to buy them herself (17, 16 years away).
I get so tired of customers allowing their child to play a rated M game and we do point out WHY they are rated m and they just don't care and approve us to sell it to them. I work for Wal-Mart and I am ashamed that they are going to sell this game.

pbl said...take a deep breath, J.D., I know you're all riled up about this (as you should be), and so am I, possibly for different reasons, but that's ok. I was *not* defending this video game or any ideology that would support it.
first of all, I certainly do not *ever* condone violence done in the name of someone (whom many people in the world consider God) who was the most peaceful human being on earth, ever. That something I consider not only abhorent but blasphemous.
secondly, I agree that the idelogy behind figuring out those who will be left behind is not only racist, and classist, anti-semitic, anti-aethiest, and many more isms. My only point in my last comment was to agree with Rachel, especially for those who wouldn't know, that the *majority* of Christians in the world (including Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and many mainstream Protestant groups) are *not* born again, and this theology prohibits believing and practicing Christians (or not) from being saved by an all-loving and all-merciful God that they believe in and worship in their own way. one of the things (of many) that I find offensive is that this game seems to depict anyone who is a non-believer in evangelical Christianity as "evil" which extends hatred and prejudice far past Jewish people and Aethiests. Which is very bad theology.
thirdly, if it seemed as though I was in anyway defending the use of any religious belief (whether I agree with it or not) to produce violent propaganda to brainwash, indoctrinate and/or convert young people to said religion, let me be very clear: I do not. I find this type of activity to be nothing short of exploitation, by some very greedy people who are working very hard to profit at the risk of bringing a great deal of harm into the world that they claim to care for.

They have a long list of unsuitables and a lot of patience. They'll get around to Methodists like me eventually.

Rhonda said...JD, I am a Christian. When I hear the "enemy of God" I do not hear atheist, jews or muslims. I personally hear satan. I do not equate satan with atheist, jews or muslims. I think you may be picking up on that because of your stance. When you have a sore toe, it seems that's the one everyone steps on.
On a side note, I've NEVER read or seen any of the left behind series.

That said, I did my own very cursory research on J.D.'s claims and found that he's very much exaggerating this issue, apparently due to his own flavor of hatred.

Jonathan P said...Ha Ha, I just LOVE it! Check out the guy in the bottom left hand corner of this screen shot. He's called "Evangalist". I guess he's a character you can become or something, but hopefully someone will hack the game soon after it comes out, so you can set it to "evil". Then you and your satanic buddies can blow away armies of cardigan wearing evangalists! Oh, and J.D., I suggest you chill. The most effective weapon against ridiculous religious superstition is always ridicule.

You obviously did not raise them with a good sense of what's reality and what's not. The only thing that is dangerous about this game is all those kids staying up late playing it and not getting their homework done. Trust me, they are not gonna go out the next day, week, or year with a weapon killing Jews and Athiests screaming barbarically "MY GAME HATES YOU AND THIS IS FOR GOD!".

Pidget said...You all are ridiculous. I'm a Christian and Christians are supposed to spread the WORD OF GOD, but in no way force it upon others. We present it and leave it there. We aren't supposed to argue THE BIBLE, kill people in the name of JESUS, or judge other people regardless of religion? I used to be an atheist until I seriously woke up and started giving GOD credit for what HE does for me in my life.
If the game involves Christians killing people who don't want to convert it isn't a Christian game. Don't judge all Christians on somebody's totally fantastic idea of a video game. I read other reviews about the game and it said there was no killing involved, it was a game about trying to win souls for CHRIST.
I don't hate JEWS or gays or atheists or prostitutes or adulterers or murderers or any sinner on this earth because although I am Christian I have a lot of sinful ways. But I pray for change in my life.
And they tried to stop me from praying in school but I told them to mind their own business and let me give thanks to MY GOD!!! And JUDGEMENT DAY is real...it's coming whether any of us like it or not!!! And it's going to be nothing like LEFT BEHIND, that was just putting it modestly for an accepting audience.

Seems like one more vote for evolution, these creators will soon be eliminated with the thinning of the herd. Maybe we should talk to the guys who wrote the story for the bible and see what they had in mind. I am sure they wouldn't want they work read this way.
-- Why do libraries and book stores have a religion section? Because nobody knew if the bible should be in fiction or non-fiction.

I have read most of the information put forth and I'm sorry "J.D" butyour linked article doesn't put forth Jews as "evil" as you so adamently put forth. You have turned "there are jews in the crowd" to "jews are the devil and they must die".. I really don't understand that.
I was linked to this by a friend of mine who is always putting up these "wtf" bulletins in which there is some obscene story relating to jewish people (she is jewish herself I guess) which under further scrutiny always turns out to be a misinterpretation and sometimes eve blatant distortion of actual facts.
I'm actually agnostic so really should I be the one upset here?
Becuase thats what your linked article is claiming. It barely even mentions the jewish population. Infact the most it says is that jews are included in the Manhatten Public. So why do you have to go off a limb and scream rascism??
Do you thrive on being hated or wished dead or desecrated?? SO much that you have to distort things to look as if you are a victim??
It really baffles me sometimes.

FROM YOUR OWN LINK
"Jews in the Virtual Crosshairs," New York Jewish Week writer Liel Leibovitz sees the situation clearly:
Manhattan's skyline is smoldering.
In the streets, the true believers are fighting to the death against the forces of evil, consisting of rock stars and atheists led by the anti-Christ, the leader of a UN-like organization.
Ordinary New Yorkers, Jews included, have little choice: They can either convert or be killed.
All this is taking place in a new video game, "Left Behind: Eternal Forces," created, ironically, by a team consisting of Jews who now say they believe in Jesus.
------------------------------------------------------
it says ordinary that the "evil" are "rock stars" (?) and athiests, also stating that ORDINARY PEOPLE, new yorkers, "jews included" will be "converted or killed".
Now gee since I'm a musician should I make a blog stating that christians are out to get us??
And why is it that jews are only included, I mean as you implied Manhatten is purely and soley Jewish-- so why not just say,"They want to kill jews".
Don't get me wrong I think its INSANE to have this shit running around as if children need to prepare for the end of days. I can SEE some growing up and taking on their own crusade.
Much like the Muslims of 9-11 (if they truly were the masterminds) and any other religion soaked activist who thinks he/she has just/spiritual cause.
But lets stay calm and wait til the blade has truly been drawn. Jew isn't the only religion that has faced persecution and you certainly won't be the last.

Lawrence said...Oh, come on. This game is silly, but it is not anti-semetic. I, personally, am not a fan of the left behind series, am not a christian, and am not going to play the game, but all it took for me was a quick look around to see that this game is nothing of the sort like what you suggest.
Do you honestly think you're doing anyone any good by posting this inflammitory nonsense?
I could watch the Little Mermaid and find something in it that I could construe as bigotry, but would that mean it's really there? No, it would mean I'm a wack job.
Seriously, there are plenty of legitimate avenues of criticism that could be taken on this game. If you hate these guys so much, pick one of those, and don't just spew out some ignorant rhetoric.

I will admit that I have not played the game, and I bet that 99% of the people that are making comments here have not either. Why don't you quit crying over something without trying it. Grow up and think before you complain.

Someone, please tell me this is a bad joke or someone will prevent this from happening or something!
