I love little kid hipsters!
Categories: Kid Decor & Style
The obnoxiously lovably trendy fashion blog, Face Hunter, is usually filled with exuberant twenty-somethings at kick-ass parties -- all in clothes that look like fashion just puked on 'em (in a good way). However, a recent entry has this adorable little hipster posing for the camera.
How cool. How cute. I love to see kids who are able to express their individuality, I love that this photo was taken at a ritzy art exhibition, and -- above all -- I love the scarf. That is one cool kid.
And while we're on the topic of child fashion, does anyone else care about this? I know there's more important things to worry about when raising a child, but let's see a show of hands from the other superficial parents -- who understands that a cool-looking kid is something worth fighting for? Just me?
Ok.
But seriously, do you have a child that's into fashion/clothing/etc? Do you encourage it? Is it a creative outlet or an unhealthy obsession with the way they look? Anyone have a little boy that's a budding fashionista?

Me, Me, Me!
I love fashion and LOVE dressing my son. He is 3 so he usually just puts on what I hand him. I try as much as I can to by a lot of what I like on ebay from all the other parents who spend 200 bucks for jeans. My son and my nephew look so cute when they are out together.
What I do know though is that I do need to be careful about making sure the he grows up knowing that the outside is a form of expression and has nothing to do with the inside. I want to stress the importance of not judging people by what they wear and that clothes don't make the man. Fashion is a form of art imo. That is what I want him to understand...down the road when it becomes important. :)

My daughter's only 3 but I like to pick what I think are fun & interesting clothes for her. I also like her to pick out her own clothes, both in-store and out of her closet.
Today she spent the day in a "go go dancer" dress I got for 90% off at Target (cheap Halloween costumes = great dress-up clothes). When she dresses herself, it's usually something like shirt with words, diaper and no pants, rainboots and a hat. We call her "Frankenstein," like the kid in "Big Daddy."
I don't think it's about fashion so much as giving kids a way to express themselves and a little creative control over their environment. It can lead to a love of fashion, I think. That she looks cool and feels confident about her choices, that's just gravy ;)

Wow, really that's a kid hipster? It looks to me like a kid was given the freedom to dress herself and that's what she came up with. She looks like how every kid would look if given that choice. Hip? I guess, but normal in my house.

You know what is cute about little kid hipsters -- girls, I mean? Is that usually, they are not dressing in a provocative way. They are into old school shoes, or funky scarves or whatever, and *not* concerning themselves with how to be prematurely alluring to men. And that is great.

I wonder if Jonathon has any fashion sense, because based on this photo, I see nothing "cool" or "hip" about this kid. (Come on - those shoes AND the scarf kill that outfit!) I'm more inclined to agree w/ commenter Amber...

My oldeest son is 5 and he has a thing for his hair. Once it is brushed and fixed NO ONE and I mean NO ONE can mess up he hair and heaven help us if it is winding outside and that messes his hair. He just blames us and got back to the bathroom and starts over. lol my husband is so ashamed. When it comes to clothes, it just depends on his mood. I mean really why can't rain boots go with a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt? :-)

Hey fellow Blogger Baby! I love kids' fashion sense. At first I was a bit bummed when I learned I was having a boy, because "how do you dress a boy?" I thought I was going to have to buy clothes with dinosaurs and crap on them. Well, that's sorta true, but thankfully there are cooler ways to illustrate boy things on clothes now. The boy thing has been a challenge for my inner fashionista -- in a good way. But I just dress him in mini versions of the clothes I like -- silk-screened Clash tees, camo shorts, cool kicks. Sometimes we rock him out in knickers and a pageboy cap like Angus from ACDC. Who knew dressing boys could be so much fun?

My daughter is turning out to be a "hipster"... rather, she is very into expressing her likes and dislikes. She's only two. But she picks out her own clothes. And the majority of which aren't the trendy, fashionable look of the moment, but rather things that we, her parents, or her aunt and uncle would wear. She likes knee high zipper boots and light blue jeans, or black and pink converse sneakers with a black t-shirt. It amazes me that she can pick out her own style at two, but whatever floats her boat. I want her to learn to be an individual, and dress the way she likes, not the way other people like or what the media/fashion industry dictate she should wear.
And yes, I have noticed that the more expressive kids who enjoy clothing and individuality and "interesting" clothing tend to not buy into the whole "prosti-tot" look.

My daughter (six) is quite the fashionista. She has better clothes than I do! I keep trying to get my son to care about what he wears, but he's still content, at nine, to let me dress him.

Sheena, if you don't think the kinds of people Face Hunter usually photographs look cool, then you probaby won't like this little girl's look either.
As to whether I have fashion sense...
...well...
Maybe we just have different tastes.

Face hunter is awesome fashion, but def. not mainstream. To me that't true fashion, but whatever. To each his or her own.
I do LOVE how much tights are back in!!! To bad it's not cold enough here in Florida to wear them. :(

My 4-year-old daughter has a sort of mix & match look. I love jumpers from the 70's (that I collect from thrift stores), worn with flared pants & a pageboy cap...colorful dresses & tights (and now leg-warmers, as it's getting colder)~
We also have a pair of bright green "Toughskins" (remember those? They have built-in knee patches) bell-bottoms that we match with her "Six-million dollar Man" ringer T)~ very cute! She is almost exclusively dressed in thrift store finds & she always looks great (plus these are clothes no one else has!)~ We have great thrift stores near us, though...the other day I found a ton of OILILY stuff in her size at a thrift store! My big downfall, money-wise, is shoes! I'm a big sucker for high quality European shoes~ Primigi, Naturino, Bear Feet, etc. My biggest argument to my husband is that they are made so much better, last longer, and are flexible & comfortable for her feet...it's true ; )

I LOVE baby fashion and like to think my 16 month old has some good looks (although we're kinda in a rut at the moment due to many reasons!). Because I have a boy it makes it more interesting to me, more of a challenge. I always see cute girl stuff but it takes me longer to find things for boys. Nadine mentioned knickers which I sell through UBR and want for my son so badly but they are too big until next year. Jeez I sell the damn things and can't even have them!
But Kellie said it best, I still want him to grow up knowing it is whats on the inside that counts - fashion, funky hair, tattoos like Mama are all just forms of expression which I hope he enjoys using as an outlet.
