Gift guide for new moms and moms-to-be
Filed under: Just For Moms, Your Pregnancy
Too often, new moms and moms-to-be will say things such as "oh, don't worry about me, let's think/talk/buy for the baby." But, if you're like me, and you're looking for a present, buying both a gift for mom and baby is fun. After taking a look at the new site How to Survive Your Best Friend's Baby, I saw a holiday gift guide for moms and moms-to-be. This got me thinking, what do I think are good gifts for the new mom?
I don't think I'm alone when I feel that the gift of pampering is one that most women would enjoy. Pregnant women who are past their first trimester can enjoy a nice prenatal massage to help soothe her aching back and swollen feet. A new mom would greatly appreciate having naked time on a table that has nothing to do with diaper changing. If a massage is out of your price range, most women would appreciate a manicure or pedicure gift certificate.
My husband gave me a gift certificate to buy some maternity clothes for my birthday with my first pregnancy. For many women, myself included, getting to buy some new clothes is a luxury that they'll try to do without. A cute gift for a pregnant woman is a maternity tee, such as this "Love Child" one from Binky Couture. If you aren't sure about her style, a gift card to places such as Old Navy and GAP maternity are always useful.
I'm of the belief that you can never go wrong with food. But, with pregnant women, you might want to make sure that she's not having any food aversions or your gift could get banished to the back room. Homemade treats are always great (I have the best recipe for chocolate covered cherries) but if cooking isn't your thing, you could bestow a new mom with a "make your own" gift certificate to places such as Super Suppers. If you're in the mood to spend a bit more money, Amazon has links to "food of the month" clubs that will surely make each month a bit brighter.
If anyone would like to send a gift to a newish mama, I'm more than happy to take a cookie or chocolate of the month gift. Do you have any tips for gifts for moms? Anything that you'd love to get?

Rachel May said...I love, love, LOVE Super Suppers!!! I just discovered it a few months ago, and it's now part of our monthly grocery budget. I can control what goes into the dish (i.e. if it calls for olives, but my family doesn't like olives, I can leave them out). I still feel like I'm cooking for my family (a little) because the dishes are the same type that I would make if I was more creative and could get out of my rut.
It's just fabulous to have a freezer full of meals. If you haven't tried Super Suppers, just do it -- at least once. It's amazing.

If your pocketbook can afford it, I would have loved a once a week or every two week cleaning person. When all I could do was keep up with dishes and laundry, my house looked like a couple of very small tornadoes lived there! Someone to vaccum, dust, mop, all the things I didn't have time to do would have been AWSOME. You'd have to be careful to not offend the recipient though. It wouldn't have offended me!
I can also see the freezer meals and stuff like that being a godsend, too!

I always try to buy something for the MOM that she can use after the birth-a book that can be read and retained in segments, some nice music, etc. Soon enough she won't be the center of attention any more.

(Leonard Maltin's is best).
And, for second timers like you and me R. venue memberships, e.g. aquariums and zoos, etc
