No more crusts!
Filed under: Nutrition: Health, Development/Milestones: Babies
My kids are connoisseurs of shaped sandwiches. It is a habit I helped to facilitate when I began using cookie cutters to make their PB&J's more interesting. As a result, we have an entire Tupperware box filled with cookie cutter that have never even met cookie dough, they are purely sandwich cutters.Apparently I am not the only mother in this bind. One mother went so far as to market her own Crustless Sandwich Cutter that eliminates those pesky crusts and seals the bread edges to ensure that nothing will ooze out on a child's sensitive hands. Cool stuff. I am hoping that Santa brings one of these to our house this year, it would be a sure hit.

ann adams said...I'm fairly laid back about food but a stickler about crusts. As a result they like them just fine. It never occurred to them that they had a choice.
I'm sure it's a generational thing. I was raised with "crusts will give you curly hair". Or "eat it - it's good for you".

Belinda said...Same here, i occationally don't care for crust so I just peal it off, my kids can do the same. Also onestepahead.com has one that cuts the kids sandwiches in fours, not twos. Besides, my mom never cut my crust off, if I didn't like I could take it off myself. She said if I didn't like something it was my problem not hers and she was right. While I LIKE the IDEA of this, the PRICE just isn't worth it.
Also what is this about sandwich contents oozing on to "sensitive hands". That doesn't make since.

Wonder Bread may go all the way back to my generation.
Our crusts though were homemade back then. I remember begging for store bought bread.

Rachel May said...Ann, it's funny you mention homemade bread. Because I'd LOVE to have the time to make homemade bread instead of buying store-bought! When my mom or grandmother makes it, I positively drool all over myself because it's so good. And I LIKE the crusts - Mom and I always cut the ends off the loaf and eat them first. :)

Rob O'Daniel said...As kids, we never knew that NOT eating the crusts was an option and I'm committed to keeping that notion from my children.
Besides being a little wasteful, another really good reason to NOT trim the crusts off of your kids' bread is that German researchers have discovered that the crust is a rich source of antioxidants that may provide a more health benefit than the rest of the bread.
A recent study has identified an antioxidant called pronyl-lysine that's 8 times more abundant in the bread's crust. This compound is not present in the original flour - it's created during the normal baking process. What's more, darker breads not only tend to have more dietary fiber but also higher amounts of this cancer-fighting antioxidant goodness too!

Christine said...Why would a child's hands be more sensitive than their MOUTH?? hahahaha!
I use a knife to spread oozy contents... and use the same said knife to cut said sandwich containing the contents.

MelissaS said...I never cut off the crusts on my kids sandwiches and they still like sandwiches with out the crusts on PB&J....grilled cheese is fine with crust. A lot of it is just personal preference, not some sort of crust love training.
Also, I never wanted to bring a white bread into our house but again, after 7 years without white bread I caved last year after they had it a few times at friends houses and ate so much more of their sandwiches. At least it's the new whole wheat white.

Darla said...I have one of these! I use it all the time, too. Contrary to popular belief, it does not merely work with "wonder bread!" :) I've actually used it with many brands and grains. It always works fine, and ONLY cuts the crust off! No waste.
Am I the only mom that still babies their babies?
