Unusual side-effects of pregnancy
When people think of pregnancy and all the symptoms that go along with it, they probably think of things such as nausea, vomiting and an aching back. But there's a variety of symptoms that all the pregnancy books don't tell you about.I remember flipping through the book Pregnancy Sucks: What to Do When Your Miracle Makes You Miserable and reading about an unusual pregnancy symptom: moles. They don't tell you about moles in some of those other books. I, personally, found that I had more yucky skin tags during my pregnancies.
I also had this thing called a "muzzle rash" all over my face, thanks to all the pregnancy hormones. Later on, in the final month of my pregnancy, I had sciatic nerve pain. While sciatic nerve pain is something you might hear about in regards to pregnancy, having it to the point where you're unable to walk is a bit uncommon.
So, what did you have? Excess saliva? A constantly stuffy nose? Or were you one of those lucky ones who breezed through pregnancy, looking like you belong on the cover of a magazine?

Jackie said...I had excess saliva in my first trimester, to the point that I thought I was drowning in my own spit. And as for discharge, I made my own washable absobant pads to keep in my underpants because the discharge is outrageous. It'
s almost as prolific as the woosh when you have your period.

My second I was a human heating element. In 40 below weather, I had ALL the bedroom windows open, and slept nekid under a cotton sheet. And I was STILL sweating. I didn't need to buy a winter coat but still.
I also found that around 8 months for both, I got totally irrational about people breaking into our house, or some other kind of safety issue. It passed after a couple of weeks both times, but it was nuts.

Claire! said...I am 33 weeks and I have had nearly constant bloody noses...which makes it hard to breath...which means I sleep with my mouth open more....which means my gums bleed! So I feel like Dracula the Boxer or something. It's awesome.

Heidi E. said...I'm loving this thread! I'm at 35 weeks right now, and I still consider myself comparatively lucky, because my nausea, sciatica, heartburn, absentmindedness and fatigue are relatively mild. My biggest complaint so far has been the congestion and stuffy nose which make it hard to breathe. But by now, I feel like I'm discovering a new symptom everyday--skin tags, hairless legs (hair seems to growing on my belly instead), swollen hands, joint pain in my knees and hips, and complete inability to get comfortable for sleeping. Until I read Jackie's comment, I had no idea that seeing things out of the corners of my eyes might also be a symptom (I figured it was lack of sleep), and I smell funny! And now that my pelvic joints are loosening, when I stand up I feel like I spent the day prior riding a horse for the first time.
So the stuffy nose should go away after delivery? If not, lie to me!

Rachael said...This is my 3rd. My first after 30 pregnancy. I have started my 2nd trimester and for the first time, have been experiencing numbness on my entire left side. It starts at my finger tips, then goes through my wrist, up my arm and eventually to my lips, gums and even my teeth become numb! This is usually preceded by blurred vision and concludes with a horrible migraine of sorts. Anyone else have this problem? With my 1st I was simply vomiting from the end of my 1st trimester all the way until I gave birth. My second was edemia so bad you could poke a 2 inch hole into my shin and it would stay there for an hour. Never had this numbness before though. Any thoughts?

Em said...I am 34 weeks pregnant right now and I swear everyone's tired of hearing me groan! I think the worst is the sore ribs and the acid reflux that often has me gagging just when I think I might get a few hours of straight sleep before one of my many trips to the washroom in the middle of the night. Also, the pain in the pelvis when I try to turn over at night is excrutiating. I don't think people who have never been pregnant, or even men (try as they might, to be sympathetic) can ever really understand what it's like to feel like you are trapped in someone else's body!
