I keep a careful watch on the lists of popular baby names published at the end of every year, mostly to make sure that my daughter's name (or any of the 10,000 names my wife is always throwing out for the next member of our brood) is nowhere near the list, even at the bottom. Well, not to worry. My daughter's name isn't on there. Yet. This year's list produced by BabyCenter shows that Emma and Aiden are still the top names, although the big controversy this year is that parents are naming their Aidens with an E rather than an A (last year, Aidan with an A was the top boy's name)
There were seven new names in the Top 100. For girls, the new names were Aubrey, Juliana, Maggie, and Nevaeh (heaven spelled backward -- maybe I'll name my next daughter Lleh). The new names for boys were Brody, Miles, and Peyton. For what it's worth, here are the top five for each gender:
Boys:
1. Aiden
2. Jacob
3. Ethan
4. Ryan
5. Matthew
Girls:
1. Emma
2. Madison
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Kaitlyn

Kathryn said...I thought I was being so original by naming my son my mothers maiden name until some college kid I encountered said "Oh yeah, we thought about doing that too but like, too many girls at my school did that." So much for my so-called originality.

Christina said...So far Cordelia is still not even cracking the top 1000 names, according to the Social Security Administration. And that's fine by me. Although it makes it a little harder to think up a name for baby #2 that is also just as uncommon, yet not a recently made-up name.
I love your idea of "Lleh". With the double 'L', you can tell people it's Welsh.

I'd suggest Regan, Christina, but apparently it's en vogue right now. And Goneril would just be cruel.

Actually Leah has been on the top 100 (according the the social security site) for many years. It has never cracked the top 50 though.

Pat said...Try incorporating the mother's maiden name for the baby. I'm doing our family tree. The women lose out because it is difficult tracing the maiden names lost when married. Also it is wonderful to find names used in honor of older family figures. Gives a feeling of love and a strong link to the past. One name in our family was used for the eldest son from 1709 through the 1930s. Remembering the grandmothers by giving their names as first, second or even third gives their history to the baby and affords him/her a sense of self.

Lisa said...Well, I like odd names. Would never saddle my kid with a family name...that is totally undoable here. I did takes off, hubby Jim, therefore, son Jamison. Another son, Ian. Twins, Bliss and Blythe. No more pregnancies for me. However, to each his own.

However, we were liking Olivia for our new little bean. Guess we will have to make that her middle name!
