Most popular baby names of 2006 announced by BabyCenter
Filed under: Your Pregnancy, Media, That's Entertainment
I keep a careful watch on the lists of popular baby names published at the end of every year, mostly to make sure that my daughter's name (or any of the 10,000 names my wife is always throwing out for the next member of our brood) is nowhere near the list, even at the bottom. Well, not to worry. My daughter's name isn't on there. Yet. This year's list produced by BabyCenter shows that Emma and Aiden are still the top names, although the big controversy this year is that parents are naming their Aidens with an E rather than an A (last year, Aidan with an A was the top boy's name)
There were seven new names in the Top 100. For girls, the new names were Aubrey, Juliana, Maggie, and Nevaeh (heaven spelled backward -- maybe I'll name my next daughter Lleh). The new names for boys were Brody, Miles, and Peyton. For what it's worth, here are the top five for each gender:
Boys:
1. Aiden
2. Jacob
3. Ethan
4. Ryan
5. Matthew
Girls:
1. Emma
2. Madison
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Kaitlyn
Be sure to check out the entire article for the rest. For example, the number 12 boy's name is Michael and the 32nd is Landon. Landon? ... holy smokes, did I miss something? Is my favorite nineteenth-century fictional father totally coming back into vogue?

Michelle said...Well, Veda, throw some black or hispanic names out here. If we can spell or pronounce them caucasions may use them. After all who would want to be know as orangejello, lemonjello or shithead? Try syphillis? Seriously, after working in the medical field for years, these are some of the names I saw coming from the black community.

Rose said...I was saddled with my grandmother's name, Rose. I always disliked it, eventhough I adorned my gram. Now that I am a grams, I can only hope one of my daughter's would honor me by giving my name to one of my granddaughter's. Instead, to date I have granddaughters with these names: Hadley, Teagan, and soon to be born, Cambri and Kendall.
So much for family history.

Brandi said...I don't understand why everyone is so concerned with giving their child such an unusual name that is not on some list. You choose a name you like yourself and not worry about what everyone else is doing or not doing or what they think of it. Besides, unless it is something totally out there all names start out unusual and within a few years become commonplace.

Sissy said...I think it's odd that my daughters name is in the top 5 (Isabella) because she is now almost two years old and I have never run across another Isabella. I have a niece with another "Top 5" name and I hear hers a lot. Oh well. I won't pick a name because it's trendy or unusual. I just choose it because I like it and it wont embarrass my child when she starts school. Hopefully.

Mummie/E said...Veda, since the names were compiled based on BabyCenter 'members,' this could be (Could be? IS) the reason for the 'ethnic' direction of the names. Of course, I don't know for certain; however, if as you suggest - the names are primarily what caucasians name their children - then perhaps it is fair to presume that primarily caucasians are BabyCenter members? Or might be from ethnic groups that prefer more traditionally 'caucasian' names??

elizabeth Paskalides said...I work in the high school and odd names are the normal course of parents. Not only can they be tongue twisters but sometimes we think the parent just did not like their baby because of the name given.
If your last name is something like Cherry or Potts or Pepper, some first names might not be good to use. Examples like, Unique, Steel, Stu, Persimmon or Peter. Why then, do the parents proceed to name their child precisely that?

Katie said...Responding to #19 (Veda): I believe this is a list of the most common names for the year, regardless of race. It's not a listing of "white" names, these names just happen to be used the most often. Perhaps blacks and Hispanics are more creative when it comes to names and don't all name their kids the same thing, therefore, their names don't show up on the list of most common names.
