Bronx passerby catches 3-year-old boy after 4-story fall

Categories: Safety, Media

While his babysitter went off to another room of his apartment to smoke a cigarette, a 3-year-old boy in the Bronx climbed out of a window, onto a fire escape, quickly losing his balance and hanging from a balcony. Two brothers on the street below noticed the boy in peril and rushed to catch him as he fell. The brothers, Julio Gonzales and Pedro Navarez, watched in horror as the boy fell through the bare winter branches of the tree above them, and then right into the arms of Navarez, who broke his fall, and then bouncing unharmed into the arms of Gonzales.

"He was coming down pretty hard -- so hard that when he hit my arm my sneaker fell right off and I just fell to the ground, said Navarez." Gonzalez added, "I caught him in my hands, and right there, boom -- I fell down and the baby's all right thank God." Miraculously, the boy only suffered a few minor cuts and bruises.

NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly has called the two brothers heroes. His officers are also investigating the incident and questioning the babysitter.
