Do you know any great meal time prayers for kids?
We got a great request from a reader yesterday. She is looking for some mealtime prayers for kids. I am trying to remember some that we used to say when my kids were little and we were looking for things that rhymed: "God is great, God is good, God be praised, Let's eat!" Or something like that. She said that they are looking not only for Christian prayers, but also prayers with an Earth-based religion bent: Thankfulness for the earth, food, clothing, shelter, safety, requests for family safety, etc.
This request comes from a regular reader, and I am sure she would be absolutely delighted if you'd comment here with your family favorites. I think it would be a great project to compile these somehow, also, and so I will think about that. In the meantime, please contribute!

C Williams said...This prayer is done to "superman" theme music.
Hold arms to the right and say (sing): Thank you God for giving us food,
Now to the left: Thank you God for giving us food
Now to the center and swing arms right and left: (center) Our daily bread (start swinging) that we are fed
fists on hips belt out: Thank you God for giving us food!
Big finish, stomp feet and/or smack table with hands to tune: (don don don don)
This prayer is done "super hero" style. It make the family smile and laugh, and gets a few looks when done in public. LOL :o)
Happy prayers to you!

#1 - God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food. Amen (really easy for kids to remember!)
#2 - Bless us O lord for these thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bless O Lord
Our daily food
make us strong
make us good
Amen
The kids learned it quick and at home when we pray my daughter always picks it.
OR
God is great
God is good
Let us thank him for our food
By his hands we all are fed
Thank You God for our daily bread
This one is better for older kids.
Hope you find something you like.

Amanda said...My kids learned the Johnny Appleseed song at preschool, and it is very very cute:
Oh, the Lord's been good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me the things I need the sun, and the rain and the apple seed
The Lord's been good to me. Amen.
Not sure what the tune is.

Audrey Smith said...I worked at a Christian based summer camp for four summers. Here's one of my favorites:
(Sung to the tune of The Flinstones)
Be present at out table
Lord be here and everywhere adored
These mercies bless and grant us
That we may feast in fellowship with thee
Amen, amen amen amen
Amen, amen amen amen
Be present
At out table
Lord be here and everywhere A-(stomp foot, or slam chair)
And everywhere A - (stomp foot again)
And everywhere adored!
(end with flourish)
We also frequently blessed our food by singing the Doxology to the tune of The Lone Ranger or Chim Chiminy

lisa said...Dear Lord,
We thank you now for food to eat,
for fresh clean water we can drink,
we thank you too for rest and care
and little children everywhere!
I have said this one with my preschool classes for the past 4 years. Unfortunately, I am not working right now because, fortunately, I am home with my youngest child.

From the South the gentle rain
From the West blow winds divine
From the North the gifts of grain
We gather now to bless this food
In perfect peace and love
Lord and Lady touch this meal
With magic from above
